We have a gated community----Our current entry gate is using a bar code on owners cars. This scanner is constantly mal-functioning. What other types of entry are better or at least more dependable?
cards? garage door type openers? Please offer some ideas. thanks, bob

BobW1,

My HOA gate is manned 24-seven by attendants. Each owner also gets a transponder that attaches to the inside car window. The transponder sends a signal to the gate, the gate opens. There is also an electronic keypad for visitors. However, without the eyes of the attendants, the gate can be more easily breached.

BobW1,

The apartment complex I use to live in had a gated entry. We were issued magnetic key cards that could be turned on and off when ever they wanted to. The cards were assigned to the address not the renter. There was a $25.00 charge if the card was lost of stolen, (the card were only $2.00) this would help them in the cost per card and deter anyone from keeping the card. (Like a security deposit) When residents left the apartment, they would have to turn in the key card when they gave their notice that they were moving out.
They also had a keypad for guests as well. For guest who didn’t have a card, or in an apartment complex many residents ordered pizza and the drivers wouldn’t have a card either they could call you to let them in or you could give them the code.
I will try to find the name of the company for you.
I would assume you will receive some very good advice from many of the people of the discussion forum.

Good luck

We have a card reading system, it uses plastic cards the size of credit cards only thicker and as you approach if your card is on your dash or above your visor it reads it 15 feet away and opens the gate. We also have a keypad before you get to the gate for visitors and owners that do not have their card with them. One punch of a button and it will scan to the owners last name by initial, then the visitor can push the owners name and it will dial their number, once a owner answers two simple stokes of the phone pad and the gate opens.

It is important to have battery backup and we have solar powered battery backup which is much more affordable over time.

Good Luck
