We had a tie last week,in our elections, for three new board members. What are we to do about it? This is a brand new board (neighborhood was just built). Allow both parties to remain on the board and add an 5th postion to make it fair? Or have the fourth person remain and be the member at large. Thanks for your input.

Anji, if your By-laws state a specific number of Board members you must comply. You can not arbitrarily add an extra position. If there is a tie between 2 candidates for 1 position another vote is taken. If there are 3 candidates for 2 positions and the bottom two are tied, one is elected and the next vote is between 2 candidates for 1 position. Or one can remove themself so the other is elected. This should be resolved during election process at the annual meeting.

roger is spot on again.

One last method, tried and true and used by election officials still to this day; if you must decide between two exactly equal vote receivers:

coin toss.
