The company that I work for is big on volunteerism and community service. Recently they sent around a survey asking employees about the types of volunteer work they do and how much time they spend on them. One of the questions asked:

How much time per month do you spend in Board service? (Serving on the board of a nonprofit agency or a non-governmental organization)

The times where listed as ranges (0-X, X-Y, Y-Z, over Z). Since the survey also included a question about direct volunteer work, I excluded the time that I spend on "Ground Committee" work or similar committee activities, but I still chose 'over Z' just for my Board time. That got me wondering if I'm spending too much time on this stuff (of course I am) or if the survey had unrealistic numbers.

I realize that your answers won't apply to my association because of differences in size and makeup, but how many hours per month do you spend on Board work?

I'm not including the actual numbers from their ranges at this point since I don't want to influence the answers, but I'll post them later.

agree.......maybe about 25 hrs. Lots of this is research with Davis-Stirling,
trying to get the HOA to vote for restated CCR's/Bylaws, and answering emails
from HO's about nonsense. "There is a spider in my mailbox."

My 25 hours is spent collecting and sending info. I have to explain and convince other Board Members to support my point of view, talk to and follow up on HOA contractors and write documents and plans in more detail than if I was doing something by myself. Working within a group has a significant amount of overhead.

That's pretty much in line with what I was thinking, which leads me to believe that the times in the survey are way out of line. The possible responses on the survey are:

8 hours or more per month
5-7 hours per month
3-4 hours per month
1-2 hours per month
Less than 1 hour per month

Probably just a poorly designed survey put together by somebody who had no idea as to what appropriate values would be. IMO: they should have just left it as an empty field for the user to enter a value instead of the multiple-choice responses.

Our monthly meetings can last anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. So let's say on average, 2.

I then spend between 3 and 4 hours a week on board/HOA stuff, depending on the time of year. During assessment season, it's probably a little higher.

I would say maybe 20-23 hours a month.

I spend about twice that on other volunteer activities, too. Well did until I had to put my life on hold till my cancer treatments are over.

But on a "normal" track, I would spend between 20-23 hours a month on board/HOA activities and about 60 hours per month on other volunteer activities.

MY association....? Let me see....I spend about two hours every weekday morning working on stuff...then one more hour after I get home from work. I won't even include the weekend hours (on my one day off on Sunday). So I guess it figures out to around 60 hours per month.

Pretty easy hours considering the pay. I'm not complaining...just saying.

Dwight,

Good Question.

I actually have two volunteer positions within the Association.

Maintaining the web - 25-30 hours per month (about an hour a day)
President - 10-15 hours per month

I would say between 20 and 25 hours per month as well. Maybe it should be a different thread but how may hours would you say your fellow board members spend per month? It seems the people who post here are pretty dedicated to their boards.
