"all windows and/or glass doors shall be covered with blinds, drapes, and verticles, and must have a white or neutral color back. The view of these permitted window and glass door treatments for the outside of the home must be white or neutral colored. No sheets or other materials may be hung over windows and glass doors"

We are having a discussion as to if window tinting would be a permitted covering. What is your opinion?

Barbara,

I believe that window tinting should be a separate issue and not be included as a window treatment.

The rational for this is that in order to meet the newer laws for energy efficiency, window companies are effectively tinting the windows (very lightly) which affects the heat transfer (it also lessens the amount of visible light entering the home (again very lightly). Therefore, in my opinion, tinting would be a part of the window and not a window treatment (drapes, blinds, etc.).

Tim, for what it's worth, I agree.

The only potential problem I can see with this is the intention of most of these types of rules is to keep windows looking "uniform". I do agree that window tinting should be a seperate issue, but you should address it now rather than later. I could just imagine on the front of a building some windows tinted and some not which may look weird.

Barbara,

I agree that window tinting should be a separate issue. Since the board wants the outside view to be either white or neutral colored window coverings they may not agree to allowing window tinting which looks black from the outside. However the state laws should be researched to find out if it is probited to disallow any energy saving measures. Tinted windows are definitely energy saving.
