In a large condo comlex, is it EVER possible to ensure that a pet has been registered with the County........ has up-to-date shots? The idea of this is to ensure that all of the dogs in the condo complex are safe and will not pass on diseases, etc. This idea has been put forth but frankly, not sure how it can be enforced. With renters occupying the units instead of owners.... the constant movement in and out.... might require someone hired to constantly police just this one thing.

A simple notification to the Animal Control office regarding the address of the animal along with a description will trigger the officers to investigate if a license is current.

I don't know why an HOA board would want to take on the task of doing such a thing, but that puts the onus on the appropriate agency and leaves the association out of it.

Alex,

I forgot what County you are in but a simple call to animal control to check the status of a dog tag is simple. They keep all owner names in a database and will pull that info for you at your request.

I'm not too sure about that...our county Animal Control has had MASSIVE cuts and may not have the staff to keep on top of that.

Our "information forms"--for ALL residents--owners and renters alike are required to fill out the pet information section and part of that is "proof" of current license. Of course that is just for dogs and cats. The hampsters get upset when they have to drag around a heavy tag on their collars.

Donna---you must have heard about the HUGE problems we have down here in Florida with the Iguanas and Snakes being turned loose.

They're taking over some areas. THEY'RE not licensed, EITHER.

Anna,

I hope that all of those S. Florida folks like Burmese Pythons because they have estimated that there are about 100,000 now in the Everglades and surrounding areas. Sure does upset the eco balance.

Here is a case where all exotics should be licensed and a place to drop them off when they grow too big and eat your kids.

Busch Gardens, Tampa, just hosted a HUGE amnesty drop off for unlicensed pets. They got all types of snakes, reptiles, primates and even some birds. They did it so people would NOT resort to just turning those "cute, cuddly" pets loose into the wild when they got too much for them.

EVERY state needs more of these things. If so, we would not have the tragedy like we did last month when a Burmese python got out of it's aquarium and strangled a little girl down here.

Anyway----back to the HOA topic about dogs.....

Oneof the major problems is that if one goes up to a person with a dog (out without a leash, etc) and ask them if they have a license, you could be shot. There just does not seem to be any way to control this business except to ...... from now on.. no new owners are allowed with pets... no new tenants are allowed with pets... even that would be HARD to control.

Alex, why do you have to go up to anyone? Simply contact Animal Control and provide the address of the owner, you should know where they live, right?

We've had animal control come to our house before, checking on the license and rabies shots for our pets.

They will follow up on all potential unlicensed animals. You don't have to get involved at all.

What's the objective here? Having a dog properly licensed and vaccinated is a matter of law. Associations are not law enforcement agencies. If there's a concern about a specific animal then call the local authorities to have them check into the matter. On the other hand if you ask them to check every animal on the property they'll probably tell you that they are too busy.

To me it's the same as the driver's licensing law. When I was on the Board we had a rule that all vehicles were to be operated in accordance with state law by properly licensed drivers. We sure as heck weren't out there making traffic stops to ensure that each vehicle was in compliance. One time we got a complaint that a woman was letting her unlicensed, 15 year old daughter drive her car unsupervised. We promptly turned the complaint over to the police and they did whatever they did with it.

I suppose there's nothing that would prevent a board from requiring vaccination records for all animals that reside on the property but people are sensitive about their pets. If you think people get upset when you tell them that their vegetable garden is growing too tall just wait til you start doing spot checks on Fido. Come to think of it, if we'd done that we might have actually had people run for the Board seats each year!!

bravo dennis

perhaps while the HOA boards (and busy bodies) are checking pet vaccinations, they can check children's vaccinations for local schools, property tax payments, proper income tax payments, I-9's for all the landscapers, roofers, carpet installers, and UPS drivers as well. After all, those are rules too, and they make my investment increase and keep my property values high..
