I am just thinking out loud. Has anyone ever gotten involved in/with any type of solar-heat pertaining to the swimming pool.. Presently, we have our swimming pool which (in the winter) is heated by natural gas... and... needless to say,the cost is enormous.. Some individuals have approached me and were discussing this subject. I have no idea how it could be done and/or even if it would be economically feasible.

Alex I thought I remembered a post on this topic and went looking for it to see if it had any help, turns out it was your post. You would mount collectors either next to the pool or on a nearby roof facing in the right direction water is circulated through tubes behind glass that heat the water and return it. Expensive to install but are supposed to pay for them selves in a few years. There is also a type that is mounted in the interior of a buildings roof to capture the heat there but I would be worried about leaks. In your other post you said the pool was only used by a few people that wanted it heated. Considering your other posts about delinquencies this is one of the first things I would cut unless your documents specified that the pool must be open year round and heated.

Local solar system vendors would be glad to present the feasibility of solar. Mounting the panels - especially the number required for a commercial pool might be the biggest issue.

Plenty of people using solar in Florida - have solar for my own pool.

The best advice you can take is to get some contractors to tell you what the price would be and what you can expect for that price.

Solar is not always an all or nothing situation. It is quite possible to have solar take care of a portion of the heating and supplement that with the natural gas system you already have. The good thing is that the contractors can come out and actually see what you have and make suggestions on where to place the collectors.

Wonder if geo-thermal is a viable option for something like a pool heater?

Alex,
My friends in Pt. St. Lucie have a new pool with a solar heat system. They are pricey in order to be efficient. AND, when there is no sun, there is no heat coming thru the heater jets so just know that part. Because it is heat and not light that needs to be generated, the batteries that get charged for lights are not efficient to produce heat for very long. I would say that this should be a cost decision because it is a large pool that you are trying to heat.

Good idea... have several contractors come out and give advice, etc.
