In Florida utility taxes are exempt fo non-profits such as hoas. There is a company claiming to get back taxes that have been paid in the past few years at a big fee. This can be done by your management company or board member. No need to pay anyone to do this.

Ellen, do you have any more information about this? I haven't heard anything about this. Is there a link to an article or info we can read?

Anna,

Sorry but I heard if by word of mouth and know of one case where the hoa is getting a credit. Perhaps a call to your electric company will be of help.

Susan,

I don't know if this is only for residents of Florida but do know of a condo that is getting a credit on their utility bill.

Yeah, I think Susan hit the nail on the head. I did a google and could only come up with some info talking about churches and the utility tax credit. Perhaps the condo Ellen refers to is a tax exempt org. (501(c))-- as some HOAs are.

Donna, nice to see you're still around!!! What is it they call them??? "Lurkers"? "Shadows"? "Stalkers"? No, that one is wrong. But thanks for chiming in when we need you!

Anna,

Naw, I'm still here but usually for 5 or 10 minutes. Many of the subjects have been answered by the usuals and there is no sense to be redundant. But I have to get my 2 cents worth in when I know something for sure.

It can be done!

We are an HOA and we pay FPL for street lights. We called FPL and got the appropriate forms - filled them out - and got a credit for SOME taxes previously paid. Additionally, we are no longer charged those taxes on the account.

You are not exempt from all taxes. But, you can save some money on this if you take the trouble to go thru the procedure. Call your local office. They should get the forms to you. The accounting is done at a central office. Took about 3 months to make it happen.

Rowr, Tommy.

I'm going to contact our local utilities!

We just got hit this spring with a several thousand dollar "bill" for a bank of street lights they had "forgotten" or, to use their words, "neglected" to bill us for for over 8 years!

It would be nice to get some of that scratch back from them (mwahahahaha).

I received a hefty credit for a condo in my area. The form was very simple to complete and the credit was posted to the utility account in under two weeks. It applied to sales tax on electricity used in common areas, but exempted that used for sewage lift stations. The credit was for the past 36 months. And from here on out, they will save about $400 a month due to the exemption.

There is a company out of GA sending letters to associations offering to apply for 50% of the amount refunded. That is so misleading BC:

A- at least in my jurisdiction, there was no refund, but a credit. Yet this company would have been entitled to payment within two weeks. This could be very bad for already cash-strapped associations.

B- completing the form look literally less than 5 minutes. All that was needed is the name of the assn., account number, meter number and name identifying the person making the request.

I have spoken to the go-to person at FPL on this, as well (our area doesn't have FPL) and he was very knowledgable about it and sent some good info.
