Hello all,

It's hard to think that this is causing a commotion amongst board members, but it is!

Our lobby was recently redone. New paint, and tiles It's nice! Our remodel committee also provided a bulletin board, same color as the lobby on a wall that isn't easily seen from the entrance. It's a common place for things like mtg notices, ets.

Our board is in an up roar because, the lobby had a bulleting board before, had one installed a week or more ago and now.. they hate it.

It's an easy fix to remove it, but the board members are actually sending out emails about this! How is it that the tiny things like this often get raked over with loads of attention, yet bigger things are often ignored.

Does this happen often in other HOA;S??

Francesca,

Sounds like you have too many board members whose priorities are out of order! Someone needs to put them on the right path!

There is an old WWII movie about a captain on a small Navy ship (I think Berl Ives) who had a small palm tree that he made his crew water and treat with kid gloves. The tree got more respect than anything on the ship from the captain. The men hated the tree and eventually I think they threw it overboard. The real story was that the captain had the tree for an item the men could hate (rather than him or their work or the war). Sometimes it is good to have a small thing for people to focus their energy on that relieves the stress of the bigger items.

I would guess there is something more to this story of why the BOD is upset.

My $.02 worth.

Francesca,
Lets do this again. The remodel committee installed a board out of the center view of the lobby.

The Board installed ANOTHER board IN the lobby?

They hate which one? the main area or the out of view one? What do the e-mails say?

Robert,
Oh, that was worth at least $.04! A wickedly delightful tale. It reminded me of my younger, choleric days when I would go to Flea Markets and buy the biggest, ugliest object that would engage my entire body to throw and make the most satisfying of explosions when let loose. A three-foot tall, corn-on-the-cob umbrella holder was my favorite. Now, that I am older, becalmed and President of my Leave-it-to-Beaver HOA I find most of the battles a tempest in a teapot no matter the fervency of the expression. My $.02 back atcha.

I didn't make my post clear. Our lobby before remodel had a bulletin board... it was remodeled and now a new one was put up in it's place. There is one board member who is saying that "it must come down immediately as the HOA didn't approve this!!" yet, we can't get this person to meet with us to discusss an emergency mtg that is urgent.. ( other financial matters)....

It's like "lets focus on the bulletin board vs. let sign time sensitiive documentation to move on gaining some back dues? "

Off topic here -

Robert - the movie you are talking about was 'Mister Roberts' (1955) with Henry Fonda in the title role. The Captain was played by Jimmy Cagney, not Burl Ives. The ship was a fairly unimportant cargo ship that wasn't really involved in the war. You are right though about the tree being a symbol, and it was thrown overboard - I believe by Ensign Pulver (Jack Lemmon).

One of my favourite old movies.

Off topic cont.

It sounds like a movie that every board president should rent! I think I will, I've only ever been able to see about 10 minutes of it.

I'd say 9 out 10 boards have a member (or members) like that. I know I do. Heck, I remember previous board members more upset about the use of salt on the walks, too much - too little and yet ignore the reserves (or lack thereof).

I think it's human nature to want to deal with the little things first; put the bigger, more complicated, issues on the back burner. Couple this with the fact that too many board members don't have a good understanding of their gov docs, much less state law (if there is state law!) so it's easy to let important issues get away from them. I know this is not an excuse; just the way it is in many HOAs.

Fran,

Why not at the next board meeting just make a motion and vote to keep it up there? Done deal.
