We have residents using the pool after dark and before dawn. We now have a keypad entry system. I had suggested we also chain the gate, has anyone else done this? What has helped in your communities? We have called the police but they come too late or never show.

Most people with keypad entry program it to not allow entry after hours. If that is the same in your case a chain won't change anything. But truth be told, I would have recommended going with a key card system where you can turn off people as needed.

Many on the forum have had good luck using video surveillance. The cost is not that bad anymore. If you do, please don't waste money on an older system that records to VCR type tapes. Instead opt for a digital video recording device.

Kirk,
With our system you enter 4 numbers,it doesn't turn off at a certain time. We can't afford to get another system at this time. Any other suggestions?
thanks

Kirk, a key-card system would also be able to track individuals and their exact times of entry, right?

Barbara, I know you can't afford a new system, I was just asking that question of Kirk for my own personal interest.

At a minimum, install several flood lights that kick on for a sustained time interval when they are triggered by motion. That should certainly bring attention to them if the pool area suddenly lights up. Also, be sure that you have signage -"No trespassing after pool closing". We've had this problem before, where the police refused to act on this because there are no signs.

Mike, that is the BEST suggestion I've EVER seen suggested here, for all the numerous times this has been brought up!!! I never thought of that! What an EXCELLENT solution!

DUH ME!!! Why didn't I think of that??? I'll certainly keep it in mind!

Yes, the key card systems can track who goes through the gate when. Understand there is a limitation in that it only tracks when people swipe the card. If they follow someone else who has opened up the gate it won't be recorded. (Unless you set the device to be so sensitive as to open when the card is within say five or ten feet.)

With the system where you have the four digit code, there may be a way to turn it off at night relatively cheaply. Most lower end systems work one of two ways. Either the power is normally on to the lock and then released when the code is punched, or the lock is passively on and power releases the lock.

If power releases the lock, then a relay on a timer can be made to disable at night. Otherwise it is a little more tricky in that the relay needs to move to constant power at night.

But the addition of lights is a good idea.

Barbara, for what it's worth, we had trespassing issues at our "lake."

We called the police.

They recommended that we post signs as it would make it easier for them to challenge trespassers.

We did.

They do.

Yes, they did, and previously they said that they would not act unless the property was posted.
