I am always amazed at what our elected officials can come up with when they are miffed. The Texas Govenor wants to secede from the Union? He must not have studied the Civil War when he went to school. Too bad he isn't a constitutional lawyer so he could read why he just can't get mad and pick up his marbles and leave.

He is just reminding the federal government that this union was established with the intent that the states and the people would be the ultimate powers, not the feds.

Actually, he is just pandering because his proclamation carries no legal weight. Personally, I am a firm believer that the states and people should reassert their constitutionally guaranteed place as supreme power wielders in this nation. Many people feel that way, and not just in Texas, but the Texans are who Perry wants to befriend.

Perry has a big reelection fight coming up soon with another well loved conservative. He has to put his name out there in a big way until then. =)

It's my understanding that is exactly what "the people" did on November 4, 2008.

Indeed they did, Michele. Indeed they did. And they will do it again four years from now. I loved the Tea Party protests yesterday. Here in my small hamlet, one of our most successful, high-end, wine-country Realtors was out there waving her sign, "Don't Tread on Me." My first thought was, honey, without property taxes you'd be a helluva lot poorer. Succession worked SO WELL for the South, not to mention the rest of the country. By all means, Texas, go for it. Would this be a true Libertarian state? Or a Classical Liberal? Would Conservatives entrench to set up their agenda? Or would Liberals flock to such a free-for-all? And you know the Neo-Cons will be on the ready. What would such a state actually look like?

Here on this site we try to learn how to live in communities where commonality does not always equal consensus. On our small scale it is a challenge. Texas? Well, my, my. . .

Mike,
We all really are aware that this is "Theatrics" but he has such a serious face when he tries to stir up the troops. He should talk with the Mayor of the Conch Republic (Key West) who seriously tried to secede a while back. The Feds reminded them that they would have absolutely no money, no aid, no help, no entry onto the mainland because of the new border. The sign on the highway still says "Welcome to Key West"

I do not support secession (very few do) but I would like to say that we would certainly fare better than Key West if we were to do so.

Also, the voting public most certainly did express their will back in November. I wonder though, how many of those voters even know that there is an amendment that is supposed to limit the powers of the federal government to only those specifically listed in the constitution. I would bet that it would be in single digit percentages.

They may have voted, but that vote should not give elected officials the right to ignore the constitution.

Just my opinion, a radical moderate. =)

Funny, I was saying this exact same thing - for the last 8 years. . . ;D

HOATalk moderator- Why is this thread here? What does it have to do with HOAs?

Good question, Robert.

Which reminds me that our sponsors, a number of months ago, were examining the possibility of a Free 4 All thread for the "regulars" to discuss off-topic topics such as this. So I'll add...

HOATalk? Any progress on the F4A? I still think it's a good idea and would keep more eyes on the site.

Robert,
There is a coralation between our government and our HOAs. HOAs are just micro mini versions of the Federal government, how the power of the people/membership can control how things are done just by being involved. Once in a while, we do address a less that gigantic HOA crisis just to lighten up the mood. Sorry that you feel it should be removed. I'll ask the monitor to delete it if they feel it is inappropriate.

The 8 years under bush were some of the very worst (absolutely frightening at times), but they were not the only administration to ignore the constitution.

Please dont confuse me with some extreme right republican bush supporter. I like Ron Paul a lot, and I have great "hope" for what obama can be, but I have yet to find the political party that I can support so I just stick with supporting individual politicians. =)

Our gov was busy pandering to some supporters hoping to raise some political hay to carry him through the until he finds his next project since his time in office will soon come to a close. In the process he apparently made some stupid comments that will likely come back to bite him should he try to move into federal politics.
