Connecticut is presently considering a bill that would limit the service of an owner as a director to a maximum of a total of 6 years - forever! This obviously would create a severe problem in smaller communities where the number of volunteers is equally small.

Do other states have such restrictions? Has anyone successfully fought such a restriction? What were the successful arguments?

As a director that is just finishing his 6th year of service, I am very concerned about the passage of this possible new law.

James,

I agree, this is definitely not a good thing! My former assn on has 49 homes and it's always been very difficult to get board members. I believe they are down to 3 from 5. Even in my present assn with a membership of 1,702 we rarely have more than one person running for a board position. Term limits might sound good, but with HOA's being volunteer assn's, it's definitely NOT a good thing. I think I would use the volunteer aspect as an argument against term limits.

I think consecutive years should be limited.

It does not hurt forrt to go on a committee for a year of two, and then back on the board. If positions can't be filled, there's appointment possiblilities.
