Our social director has suggested organizing a neighborhood road race as part of our Memorial Day Weekend activities. The idea is that it would be both a way to do something different in the neighborhood and try to raise some additional funds.

I'm checking with local law enforcement about traffic issues, possible permit issues, etc. since our roads are public rather than private. I'm also checking with our attorney about liability issues.

Have any of you tried to organize something like this? What are some of the logistical issues you've run into? Do you have any pointers about the best way to organize it without exceeding a reasonable budget?

Thanks for any and all advice.

I hope it's a FOOT Road Race.

Anything else would be illegal and not in the mission of the HOA.

Matt, I hope you're making a joke. You are, aren't you? I can only imagine the liability issues surrounding this. I guess bake sales and car washes just don't make money anymore?

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I meant a running race (i.e. "The Peachtree Road Race" in Atlanta). Something along the lines of a 5K or Fun Run/Walk.

Again, thanks for any advice.

X-nay the idea.

The logisitics won't pass - closing off public roads for a private race takes too much coordination with the authorities.

Instead, get a team of residents to enter into an already established race under your HOA's name.

Also a No from me. If the members have so much excess energy, have them volunteer someplace, clean the common area, build an arbor, wash or clean common area or HAVE A PICNIC. You have to sponsor functions that everyone can participate in, be they want to or not. Unless you do a walk for a charity or to prop up your Reserve Funds,I say this is not something the HOA should be doing.
