For most pools that have lifeguards and for young children or teenagers have passed a swimming proficiency test, what is the minimum age that you recommend for anyone that wants to attend the pool without an adult. We've noticed that with some government pools, county, and state pools, the minimum is age is 18 for liability reasons. What do you think is reasonable for a minimum age without an adult present.

I just posted pool rules for an association who's web site I look after. The minimum age for them is 12

Everywhere I've lived with a pool in Ohio, the minimum age was 14 but all states vary. I would check with the HOA's insurance carrier and the county authorities that license the pool for operation;

Studies show that 5 out of 4 people have problems with fractions

I work for a commercial swimming pool company in Maryland. Most of our HOA clients (and other clients) have 12 as the minimum age.

Our minimum age for the pool and spa is 14. We have no lifeguards. Up to that age, they must be accompanied by someone 18 or older. So how you define "adult" matters too.

I believe i4 is in our muni codes or even state codes. I'd follow Glen's suggestion and check your local/state docs wand with your ins. carrier.

in South Carolina it is 16 BY STATE CODE

your state will also have a code

? why think, just follow the code ?

Here's one from Cali: "California Code of Regulations ยง65539(c) requires pool signs stating 'WARNING - NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTY - Children under the age of 14 Should Not Use Pool Without an Adult in Attendance.'"

Our own rules language is stronger and says such youngsters "shall not ..."

I have to say that 12 sounds really young to me to swim unsupervised.

If the County and State are requiring 18 as age are you sure it is just liability or is it State Law? I would check your state law and with your insurance company on how age affects cost of insurance. Your insurance company also should be aware of required minimum age for your state. Then make the choice based on facts we do not know and a hich potentially can only be provided by your insurance company.

for a 'public pool' (yes, your HOA pool is a public pool for regulatory purposes) the age should be that of 'state' adulthood

(a member of the general public might be an invited guest - only 'owners only' pools would be private)

may not be written law, but is definitely common law / common sense
