I would like to put together a workshop for incoming board members to educate them about their role as leaders of the corporation and provide basic information. Walk through the statute governing their association, their documents and give each a board notebook with their docs, calendar of B o D meetings and room for minutes, etc. Has anyone done anything like this and, if so, do you have an outline that you like?

AnneH,
That is a great idea. What role do you play for the HOA? ;) Most Board members go into the job with almost total ignorance so someone who is qualified and is willing to teach them about Statutes, Documents and basics of running the corporation is a valued asset to them.

Download and include the appropriate sections of some of the free reports available at:

http://www.cairf.org/research/best_practices.aspx

Pull appropriate articles from:

http://www.communityassociations.net/board_responsibilities.html

and:

http://www.communityassociations.net/board_corporate.html

Basic course should be:

State law as it applies to you

Understanding your documents

The roles and responsibilities of being a board member and/or officer (fiduciary responsibility, duty of care, duty to act, etc.)

How to read your financial statement

Understanding your insurance policies

How to run a meeting, board and general

Communications to the residents, transparency in governing

Start there and whatever else you think they need.

Joe

Anne,

I think this is a great idea! Kudos to you for thinking of it. :-)

A word of caution. If this workshop will be attended by a quorum of board members, then it must be noticed and open to all members of the assn. IMO, this is IAW FL statute.

I just put together a "reference CD" for the new members of the Board. Included are: our governing documents, FL laws, Board minutes for 2 years, 2 years budgets, and more.

You can't make people do their homework, but the least we can do is make it easier for them.

Anne,

This may not have been done before but what an excellent suggestion.

Great ideas everyone.

MaryA, yes, you're right, it will have to be a noticed meeting. Maybe I'll make it a four hour seminar- LOL! I have no problem with members being present, but they will have to know that it is a meeting for the Board, not members. I like the CD of docs idea, too.

How instructive this would be for members, too!

Good job!

Anne,

My assn provides a CD containing all the community docs to every member of the assn. You may want to consider doing this if you go the route of a CD.
