I am looking for some guidance on the type of qualifications needed to be active board members. I would think business acumen would be desireable, but what of the "soft sciences" would you recommend?

JoC,

A desire to serve the hoa, reading the by-laws and covenants of the association and understanding them and being on the board for the betterment of the association. Common sense would be good. Not to be cynical but some requirements for hoas is that they have a pulse and will put their name on the ballot since no one else will. Sad but true. Then, unfortuately, there are some who get an ego boost thinking they are now important. Watch out for these guys.

A good board member will:
Understand the concept of a HOA (non profit status, board dynamics, etc.)
Understand all governing documents of the HOA
Willing to work in a group setting
Willing to participate in a committee
Be approachable to other Members about issues involving the HOA

I just wonder where these discussions come from. In my HOA (and I thought all others that are no longer under developer control) there is a single main qualification: getting enough votes from the membership.

Having said that, I personally look to vote for people who have common sense and ability to think things through. I do not believe one needs to have specific business experience.

It would certainly help to have a good understanding of small and large group dynamics.

Kirk,
I read the OP and the first thing that came to mind was "breathing."

However I don't suppose that should be a recommendtion, so I would go with a interest shown or committee work. When you think of it the majority of people never have served on a board. In my experience the "Old boy network is alive and strong," also in a lot of HOA the golfing bunch far out number the non-golfers, so they are a large source. In small communities, I think it is again the ones showing interest. What appears to me is how the good ones stand out. The cream comes to the top, I suppose. Another thing, is they may not know ebough to be effective to begin with and how they learn the job determines their effectiveness.

Jo,

There are no type of qualifications "needed" to be considered for a board position. All h/o's, by virtue of their membership in the HOA are "qualified" to run for a position on the board. IMO, the board should never place certain qualifications on the position. Everyone might think a retired CEO of a large co would make a better board member than a gal who's only been a homemaker for 30 years -- but, maybe NOT!!!

You got that right Mary.
Evidence this site. Now I am not suggesting we are comprised as a Board but we do accept anyone posting on this board that can make their case and we seem to be split about 50/50 gender wise.
