Warm wishes to all for a very Happy New Year filled with love, happiness, good health and prosperity. If you're going out tonight, please be careful on the roadways.

Sincerely,

Good morning and Happy New Year! I had a quiet (boring) evening as I truly feel that New Year's Eve is "amature night". Much, much safer staying in. Besides, I'm one of those poor slobs that has to work today.

But lets take a head count! Everyone please "check in" now, just to let everyone here know you're safe and sound.

Happy New Year,
I think I am safe, and on the physical side, I suppose I am more sound than unsound. The mental side of sound has always been a question.

Anna,
Checking in. We planted 2 HUGE!!!!! River Birch yesterday and by suppertime, it was a chore to turn on the oven so we definitely did the boring/safe thing and stayed home. But we got 2 killer trees to enjoy looking at today. Happy New Year to all of you.

We had a great late dinner, watched a video, had the tree up and fire going. (The only dissapointment was the lame shows that were on to welcome in the new year on Fox and ABC.)

Much to be thankful for.

It is nice to see so many upbeat posts, usually it's only Donna. Group Hug!

My best to all in the New Year!

Ok---I just got home from work. From the replies, I can see which of us spent the evening at home; alone, or with friends and loved ones who are too smart or too poor or too SANE to go out and hit the roads and bars and welcome the new year with libations away from home.

I hope the rest of you are recovering and enjoying the new year.

As always, Donna bring a "simple" yet refreshing note to this site. I share her joy in planting two new birch trees!!! I'm sure it's a wonderful sight to behold. Donna spent a lot of years (as do I) staring at skimpy palms and mangrove bushes and lush foliage is always appreciated.

Michelle, what is a Southern Good Luck Meal? Sounds interesting!!!

Also, what the heck is a Spanish Back bender sloppy smooch? Robert?

Dana, you're not a newbie. You're a GREAT asset to this site! As are ALL the posters, here.

Here we go again, guys! Another year!!!

Dana, Rookie, Newbie...whatever. I remember when I had my 100th post! Now I'm pushing toward 400. So we BOTH have a LOT to go before we hit two or three thousand, like some of our comrades.

I'll take a guess on the Southern Good Luck meal.

Collards and black eyed peas is one.

And another is "Hoping John" and I ain't telling you what that is.

A Spanish Backbender was always performed at the end of the "Why Dance." I know I have to lead you all down the lane. The "Why Dance " was when you had your sweetie or whatever tight (and I am talking grinder tight), and a slow dance starts and you just stand there and move without going anywhere. Hence name "Why Dance". At the end you bend the lassie backwards and attempted to give her oral hygiene, and worse than that was the French Spanish Backbender, and I am sure you can figure that out. Then you woke up and had to get ready to go to work.

Cornbread
Kale
Cabbage
Corned Beef Brisket
Rice
Black-eyed peas
Apple Pie

All this is consumed at midnight to ensure good luck, good health and prosperity in the coming year.

You can swap out Pork Loin or Country Ham for the meat.

But this is what our family has eaten traditionally at midnight on new years for at least 40 years that I know of.

We don't really believe the midnight munching will bring all the above, but woe to the family member who doesn't show up and partake! Everyone considers him/her to be Bad Luck for the next 12 months!

I too had the traditional southern meal although not at midnight, all of the components symbolize good luck/prosperity/wealth. This was started in our family by my momma who was part Cherokee and part hillbilly (from Hazard KY) and although she's long gone, old traditions die hard. The cabbage and kale represent folding money; the black-eye peas represent change and pork for prosperity because the pig is the only animal that eats moving forward.
