Hii, I'm new here so bear with me!! My grandma lives in Hamilton, Ohio and they have street parking on both sides of the street, so needless to say, it's fairly congested. There's room for 1 lane of driving. Anhoo, my grandma is 93 and really needs a handicap spot in front of her house. How do I go about this?
Thanks, Tracy

hi tracy, you will need to give us more information for a better answer.

as is, the best way to get a designated spot for your grandmother would be to ask the board nicely for one.
without knowing more about the place she lives, i cannot offer any other advice, since some or none of it may apply.

For instance: is the street public, or owned by the HOA. Are the homes apartments, condos, duplexes, or single family detached. What common elements does the HOA own? Are there designated parking spots for owners anywhere? are there driveways?

the more you tell us, the more we can figure out which situations may apply, and which don't.

Hi Tracy! Welcome to our forum. First some questions: Are you (your grandma) in a deed restricted community? Are you (she) part of a Homeowner's Association; or is this a condo community? Are the streets private or public? You'll find a lot of helpfull information here and don't feel we're "grilling you"....but we have a lot of questions before we can give you a lot of answers. It's nice to see you're looking out for your 93 year old grandmother!

Her city may be of some help. They can designate a handicap parking space...now comes the problem even if it is put in and the HOA allows it, the space can be used for "anyone" with the proper plate/placard. It would be the humane thing for the HOA board to do and reserve a spot for her but don't count on their generosity. Some cities can label the parking for a specific address only, you'd have to check with the city to see how or if they'll designate a space.

Hi Tracy,

Welcome aboard! You'll probably have to put om your detective hat and first find out who owns and controls the parking on the street. If it's a city owned, city controlled public street, then getting any specific handicapped parking areas will be tough. If you drive around the city, you probably won't see any specific handicapped parking areas on a residential street. Handicapped parking spaces are usually just in the business districts of a city.

If your grandmas homeowners association owns the streets and controls the parking, then they could paint some blue lines and put up signs designating handicapped parking spaces. If they do, they should put in several of them because suddenly a lot of people will have get handicapped placards or stickers so they can use those spaces. I doubt the association could reserve one space specifically for your grandma, so there would need to be several in the area.

Good luck.
