This is on the subject of BBQ grills on condo patios. It often times refers to Group R, Division 1 occupancies. Does anyone know what that refers to? No... the local fire department here does not know

Most jurisdictions have fire codes that require you to place the device at least 15ft away from the builing while is use and they prohibit the storage of Propane on decks, patios, or within the unit. Why even have it if you can't store propane. Call your fire marshall.

Alex:

I find it amazing that no fire official will comment on it, have you tried the fire chief? Everyplace I have lived (4 states) what you are talking about is against fire code. Do people still do it, yes...

Alex,

What is a Group R, Division 1 occupancy? Is this what the Fire Marshal is saying he doesn't know about? Or, he doesn't know about restrictions on the usage of BBQ grills on condo patios? I, too, find it strange he wouldn't know about the latter.

Alex,

This is touchy. If there were a fire caused by one of those BBQ's, will the insurance carrier you use pay for the damages?

Some insurance companies have exclusions written in the policy regarding negligence.

From a risk management perspective, this might be something your HOA needs to look at deeper.

Email or call me if I can be of more help.

Alex I could not find Group R, Division 1 in the Florida codes anywhere, I did however find it by doing a Yahoo search: Group R, Division 1 occupancies are apartments, hotels and condos with three or more dwelling units.

While a search finds there are only seven cities/counties that ban grills in Florida; I find it unusual that the fire department won't tell you one way or another if they're banned where you live.

Studies show that 5 out of 4 people have problems with fractions

Thanks for ur response.. It gave me an idea to google it and it worked. The Groukp R, Division 1 does apply, in addition to other types, condo units. As for the fire dept. The problem is that they just do not know. Now, I will complile an email and send it to them to inform them what Group R, Division one occupancies are so they will know in the future.... Keep in mind that in today's society, people are not the brightest
