I am helping one of our current board members with this. I recently got a flyer from a group of 5 people who are running in "a block" of members in order to gain control of the board. That flyer identifys them as a "Dream Team" and states they are full of integrity, honesty ect. NO platforms were mentioned nor what these people do for a living or what not.

Do you have any great ideas for a successful flyer ? Like when should they be sent out in conjuction with ballots and what do you think they should say? Are pictures of the candidates a good idea?

Thanks.

I would suggest a brief summary about the individual; name, occupation, experience - if any & what they hope to bring to the community. It doesn't hurt to add some personal information, such as married, two grown kids, how long you've been a member of the community, etc. I don't know that it needs to be anything fancy, but there is lots of graphics software available these days if that's the route you want to take. I would keep it brief, people don't like a lot of verbage. Photos of a candidate certainly couldn't hurt.

We like to have a community gathering about two weeks prior to the election so homeowners have the opportunity to meet the candidates, as well as each other. Again, nothing fancy - a block party type activity.

I think it's interesting that 5 of your homeowners have gotten together and identified themselves as a "Dream Team". If that were my neighborhood I would be very wary of that!

OOOH YEAH, does that sound scarey. A block of 5 , running a Board and all thinking alike? No Way. I hope that your members have enough forsight to know that this spells trouble. Unless they are perfect and the smartest, most brilliant people in the world, I would be skeptacle at the least.

I think a few homeowners are. The flyer had NO plateform, no agenda of wished for things.. just a homemade word flyer statin Honesty integrity.. mentioned that one of the canddates has been on the board for many years..

I think a flyer asking for votes for 5 individuals sends a message that isn't too clear to homeowners. I myself am asking our neighbors to vote for the newbies as there are more than a few running as well.. ( 3 I think )

How are your elections handled? Are candidates nominated and voted on individually, or do you do a top-down election (the top 4 vote getters get the positions)? I wonder why they thought there would be an advantage to proposing a "block" of candidates.

In any case, make up your own flyer and bullet your campaign promises. Keep it short; people just don't read anymore. Make personal visitation - pleas to people you know who ARE planning to attend. Cultivate the YES votes for yourself.

Good luck!

As silly as this sounds Susan, I do believe it is a group of individuals who are longing for control of our HOA. There has been alot of scuttle between the current members and this is thier way of trying to pry someone off the board. ( this is very obvious )

We do cumulative voting. 5 votes on one ballot divided up or given all to one person. the top 5 win. There are currently 9 candidates and 5 are "sticking" together as what they are proposing themselves be called the "Dream Team".

My friends slogan is 2008 is the Year of Change.. and acutally is welcoming new people that is their approach.
