Our community (local municipal government) has a wonderful program for helping HOAs and other similar organizations be successful.

Was curious how many others had similar local government support? Here is an example of the types of things they do:

"Department of Neighborhoods
Homeowners Association Training Sessions

Mayor XXXXXXXX wants to provide you with tools to make our community the best hometown possible. The Mayor’s Neighborhood Toolbox Tuesdays are designed to help you learn new tips and share best practices. These workshops are meant to focus on the inner-workings of your association and strengthen your homeowners association. Strong neighborhoods are an important aspect of a thriving community.

Please join us for this series of workshops:

March 18 “Keeping the Lights On”

Many Homeowner Associations provide vital services to their communities, such as streetlights and trash collection, paid for through mandatory assessments of the homeowners. But collection can be difficult and problems can arise when people don’t pay. Learn about tools and strategies to help your association collect assessments and tips for getting back on track when collections have fallen behind.

March 25 “Building the Organization”

Discusses promoting resident involvement and support of the association, recruiting board members, building the organization through community activities, creating websites and newsletters.

Location:

March 18 - XXXXXXX Community and Technical College – Southwest Campus, 1000 Community Campus Drive

March 25 – XXXXXX Middle School, 7315 XXXXX Road

Registration:
The training session is $5 and is non-refundable.

MicheleD: Your state does not appear with your "poster's name" so we do not know where you reside. But, what a wonderful local community you live in that would support HOAs in the area!!! How great is that! for them to want to work with residents, who are already taxpayers, who will actually get something from the community for their tax dollars. A win, win situation for all!

I have never heard of this before. But, certainly, all local municipalities in all states would benefit from ensuring that this service program is available to their HOA residents. It seems the Mayor's office of your city spearheads this workshop, but how would a new municipality gain info about it and perhaps offer it in their area? Is it government funded, or funded by taxpayers?

MicheleD - Nice to see your municipality reaching out to homeowner association's to assist. Now the more critical side of me wonders if your association foots the bill for snow removal, trash-pickp, and electrical street lighting expenses. If your association funds these expenses does your municipality reimburse your association for it's cost to provide those services? If not, didn't anyone in the association ever wonder why they are being double taxed? Here in NJ, as I've posted before, we have a law on the books to requires the municipality to reimburse the association for the municipalities cost of providing the services. Go to the following link: http://www.njlawblog.com/2006/07/articles/community-associations/is-your-association-receiving-the-benefits-of-the-municipal-services-act/
Many associations here in NJ pay once in taxes, then again in association maintenance fees, thus relieving the municipality from providing those same services that they provide the residents in the rest of the borough. Major double taxation and does not fly here in the Garden State.

Yes, of course it behooves a municipality to aid HOAs any way they can. They're not just being "nice." The cost of training and other props is a whole lot less than the "real" services the municipalities don't need to furnish because the HOAs are mandated to do so.
There has gotta be municipal sainthood for whoever dreamed up the idea of transfering all these expenses to the residents of HOAs.

As alwaays, communication and support are two way streets. Me thinks Michele had a hand in accomplishing this trick, and I say, Very nice, well done, and it is wonderful to see how a post like this can brighten everyone's day.
