What is the difference between a resolution (that gets written into the book of resolutions) and a motion?

A motion is a tool/method used as a precursor to bring a topic to the floor for resolution. A motion can occur on a board or owner level depending on the meeting and the rules of the association. A board member may make a motion to approve the minutes from the last open meeting inclusive of the revisions as discussed. The motion may be seconded by another board member and all board members may state aye, or yes to the approval.I'm sure someone will give you a more legal type explanation.

Not much. A resolution has some "whereas" and "therefores" in it, but BOTH need to be accepted (voted in by the Board).

If you're going to adopt a policy or new rule, you should always put it into the form of a resolution, which should be kept in a "Book of Reslolutions". A resolution generally outlines the reasons for it and the processes by which it will be implemented and enforced. For example, every association should have a resolution regarding the handling of reserve funds: who can authorize the transfer or movement of funds; who can withdraw funds; where they should be invested; limiting the investments to governement-backed instruments; requirements for expenditures, etc.

Resolutions tend to go into more detail. And yes, they should have the "Whereas'" and "Therefores".

Thank you. It seems our problem is solved. We will rescind that resolution!
Now, how do we do that? What are the words we need?

YOU: "I make a motion to rescind the resolution to XXXX, adopted on XXXXXX."

VOICE FROM THE GALLERY: "I second that motion."

. . . and so forth. . .
