We have a large HOA of 1355 lots. Each individual owns their own home and we do not have condos. One of our members wants to limit the term of president to one year terms. Since we own our own roads, water system and we are gated, it is very sophisticated. One year is not nearly enough time for anyone to learn what goes on. What do you think would be the value of limiting a term to one year with something this big?

Connie,
In my honest opinion? It's a "Stupid Idea". But you must have term limits in your Bylaws? That will tell you what is the term for the Board members. 1 year is really not a good term for getting into the swing of things. We do 2 years with an alternating number of members being elected. 2 years for 2 of them and the next year 3 get seated, always having 2 or 3 members remaining on the Board or being replaced.

Personally, I'm opposed to "terms"
Let the voters decide who should be in and who should be out.

how do you not have one year term limits already on officer positions? Every year, you elect new people to the board, correct? And every year, don't they meet and elect officers?

That's how our by laws direct our HOA to do it. We have no choice in the matter.

ConnieS1: Be careful NOT to confuse the 'term' of one's SEAT on the Board with how long one is to assume a certain officer role. These are two separate issues. Your own docs should state the term of office to be fulfilled by all Seats on the Board. A member is elected to a seat on the Board, and the Board members then in turn review abilities and desire of each to fulfill a certain position/role.

It is well to have a staggered term limit, so there remains a few 'veteran' Board members while gaining newbies. But, to do that it is usually done the first year of resident control and your docs may speak to this.
