I’ve been trying to understand where an HOA’s normal pet rules fit in when someone has an emotional support animal. I recently went through an ESA evaluation with My ESA Therapist, and it helped me understand the difference between an ESA letter and simply having a pet.

What I’m still unclear about is how the HOA process works. Can an HOA apply its usual pet restrictions to an ESA, or does a reasonable accommodation request change things? I’m also wondering what kind of documentation an HOA can reasonably request.

Has anyone here dealt with this situation? I’d really appreciate hearing how the conversation with your HOA went and whether the process was straightforward.
