Currently we have two providers and everyone has their own account. There could be more trash haulers if people used a 3rd or 4th.
I'm suggesting that we have one provider for all (9) families.

This may provide some cost savings to users and would allow the cost to be rolled into the dues if everyone has the same level of service.

My thought is that the fewer big trucks we have on our road the longer our road will last. We have a few tight curves in the road and it always surprises me how often people can't figure out how to drive on the road. The edges of the road seem like the most delicate part.

Are there any downsides to having a unified service? I'm sure any HOA with a large number of families uses just one service provider.

Thanks,
Mark

After thinking this through, I realized that it would be outside the HOA's jurisdiction to require anyone to use another service.
Our HOA CCR's state we are organized to maintain the road and right of way. We could change the CCR's but at this time it would be something we could ask for but not require.

How'd you wind up with two providers? Did the developer use one and families newer to the community decide to do their own thing? Do these folks show up on the same day?

You don't say how long you've lived in the community, but ask around to see what the back story is. Perhaps the city or county had something to do with it? My own trash collection service changed days and companies a month aho - took a minute to get used to the new day, but i can live eith that.

Have everyone attend a meeting to discuss the pros and cons. It does make sense to deal with only one company - it may be a matter of everyone agreeing with the pickup date. You might also be able to reduce the amount of trash by starting a recycling program. See which company offers that and what tgecprice might be. You probably don't need weekly pickup of recyclables- every other week can suffice.

You are absolutely correct the more trash truck traffic you have the shorter the life of your roads. This is why many cities in the Midwest have mandated a single provided for their city.

I doubt 9 units is going to have much bargaining power to get much of a discount with a single provider.

It seems to me the streets are common area and the HOA can regulate who is authorized to use them and when.

Good job. I would just add that if you asked owners to agree to use XYZ provider, and the HOA coordinated this in any way, the HOA would also be outside the governing documents.

Mark, you are absolutely correct in this re-assessment of your position. Unless you roll trash service into the monthly dues, then bid out for trash services that's funded by the HOA, then you face a voluntary effort to simply trash pickup, which will be tough.

"I doubt 9 units is going to have much bargaining power to get much of a discount with a single provider."

Two years ago our 18 home HOA decided to change to a single trash hauler for the same reasons, we had 3 different companies driving around the sub.

Companies in MI have HOA rates, get everybody to sigh up and have the HOA pay the monthly rate and savings were around 40% average per household.

Took a little coordination for everybody to get their current accounts to end on the date the new contract started but now it's peace and quiet in the neighborhood
