Hi:
Our HOA does not have a dedicated social committee budget per se. We have hosted a summer Bash, an Easter Egg Hunt and now have 2 more events planned for later this year. Most of the expenses have been from donations from our Social committee volunteer and a few private businesses. We are looking into ways to "fund raise" to cover the costs of expenses of our socials held within the HOA.Has anyone had any luck with such ventures.

Thank you

There was a recent discussion on this website about the social side of HOAs and some of it addressed how these committees should be funded - https://www.hoatalk.com/Forum/tabid/55/forumid/1/postid/381694/view/topic/Default.aspx

(Hopefully this link works)

In some communities, the social committee receives a small budget, while others are strictly voluntary, with homeowners chipping in food, supplies and whatnot. I think part of the answer may depend on who you'll be soliciting. If it's the surrounding area, a few people might balk at paying towards something that will only benefit the people in X community - this isn't the same as that community holding a food drive for the local food bank.

Have you tried asking the board to consider funding the committee in the next budget? You can look at previous expenses to see what could be a number to start with. The conversation listed above also suggested polling homeowners to gauge their interest in social activities - if yours have been well attended, that would help towards convincing people its worth giving the committee some seed money.

Then you can consider what might work. People don't like being hounded, so selling something practical like oversized trash bags could work (two high school football teams in my area did this for a few years)

If the social committee is not formed as it's own entity, then any income the committee received should technically be reported on the Associations taxes. Those funds would be considered non-exempt income under form 1120-H (meaning taxes must be paid on them).

Nothing personal, but why do your residents need someone to hold fund raisers so they can attend private social events for free?

Sell tickets. If you really want to attend a private Easter egg hunt with your children / grandchildren, paying a few $ is not asking to much.
