Hmmp, traffic circles (aka roundabouts) are anything but traffic calming (maybe in the middle of the day). They've gotten really popular in my area, but people tend to SPEED UP when they enter and one has to pray you're not T-boned!
Last week a guy behind me honked because I allowed the driver on my left to proceed - because, ya know, right of way.
I swear people lose IQ points the minute they get into a car.
Roundabouts have gotten really popular here too, and the typical speed limit is 15 mph. What they're good at is keeping traffic moving. We now have roundabouts at intersections that used to be 4-way stops and had cars backed up like crazy during rush hours.
The community where I used to live is working on a really ambitious roundabout with multiple lanes and multiple entrances/exits (and currently lane closures due to construction). If you speed up, you could end up anywhere from a new residential development, an interstate, an unpaved section that will eventually lead to a parking lot, or headed back the way you came. Or maybe even the way you'd intended to go. If fellow drivers also speed up, you may end up going in circles until you run out of gas or electrical charge. I swear the design of this thing is probably an arcane symbol that will usher in Armageddon. Look at the state of this country and tell me I'm wrong.
