The association had no registered agent for over 2 years.
What are the liabilities involved?

You did have one, it was the last one reported to the corporation commission.

Since, I expect, no legal paperwork was attempted to be served to the Association (which is what the registered agent is for) it's not a big issue.

Simply update your paperwork with the corporation commission with the current registered agent and move on.

I agree.

Some charge over $200 per year for that service. waste of money for HOA's that have no legal issues.

If you want to make a thing of it, make a complaint to the State corporation commission and if they will take what ever action they deem is necessary.
Be sure to include documentation.
