(No, this isn't about firing up your pellet grill or firepit!)

This is about the type of gaslighting where people do things that result in you second-guessing yourself. It's ok and normal to have some doubt about decisions we may make as board members, but when board colleagues try to manipulate you this way, that's something else. This article was geared towards the workplace, but there's stuff that can hep if you're on a HOA board (which looks and feels like another type of workplace - and often not in a good way). Enjoy!

One of the most effective tools against gaslighting is knowledge. Once you recognize the technique, it becomes easier to spot it. And it's unfortunately common, so you'll get plenty of practice...

Knowledge about the job is also important. I was happy to see that the largest property management company in our area is now offering board education to their clients. The first year of board service can be rough, and newbies may wonder what the heck they've gotten themselves into and should they quit. Communities can lose board members who have the potential to be really good once they develop thick skins and know what they're doing.
