We are a 6-unit vintage building. Amid ongoing below-freezing temperatures, a recent frozen kitchen pipe in one of our our units means that the owner of that unit is without hot water in the kitchen. (All six of us are without *cold* water in the kitchen, as we cut cold-water access as an anti-freezing precaution. But the other 5 units do have hot kitchen water. And all 6 units have both cold and hot water access in their bath and laundry rooms.) The owner without kitchen hot water (who will go about a week without hot water in the kitchen until temperatures rise enough to start running water again) is requesting a "hardship allowance" for eating out/ordering in food--claiming that without hot water in their kitchen, they cannot prepare meals. Has anyone ever dealt with such a request? Any advice?

Why are responsible for what a person does in their home? Are they a member or a tenant? Why can not put a kettle on to make hot water?

I spend holidays with a family that pipes freeze on the regular in cold weather. We deal. Heat up the water on the stove. They still have hot water in another room

What kind of hardship? They want to skip dues? Not going to happen unless you all let it.

Thanks, Melissa. This is a member/owner who is making the request.

IF that particular frozen pipe IS the responsibility of the HOA to maintain, repair, etc., the only thing I'd consider reducing is their portion of the electric or gas bill for the 10 days. tiny, no doubt. Their request is unreasonable and silly given their access to hot water.

That's simple, boil water on the stove. I would offer to carry the water up the stairs lol.

No, nada, nope, hell to the naw!

There are still some places that do delivery, even in this weather. If not, the water appears to be running and I'm sure he/she has a stove to heat the water and - presto! Hot water.

I also assume this owner has a microwave? Any reason that won't work?

The HOA is doing maintenance if they are turning water off. The HOA is doing their due diligence to prevent damages.
