From the "We Fight About Everything Around Here" Department comes this story about Skelly, the 12-foot tall Home Depot skeleton, who is doing battle in HOAs around the country: The Home Depot 12-foot-tall skeleton’s nemesis: HOAs

Quote: Every hero must have an enemy, and Skelly’s greatest nemesis is the Homeowners Association.

(As an aside, my employer is building a large community that has an old cemetery in the middle of it. I tell ya, the spooky Halloween stories just write themselves.)

I saw this a few months ago. We too have a person whom keeps their Skeleton up all year round. (NOT in our HOA but city). They change the theme of it every holiday or celebration. Had a graduation cap on etc... Occasionally it will adopt a "friend". Part of me thinks the reason is that whomever purchased it told their spouse... "If You spend that much money on a Giant Skeleton it best be out in the yard year round!". LOL!!!

We do have one in our HOA. Everyone loves it. It has a glowing red chest to boot. One time they threatened not to put it up due to the work involved. Think the neighbors revolted and demanded it! LOL!

To their point though, I do think there is a limit to certain decorations. Yesterday I saw someone have Christmas light lit up on their house... It's not even Halloween yet...

No skeletons around here, just a blow up ghost and pumpkin in my neighbor's front across the street.

I used to pass one house on the way to work which had a Harry Potter theme of sorts, complete with dragon. It stayed up for almost a year (no HOA). Neither tge neighbors say enough or someone (or several) went after them. Most were the blow up variety, so you can imagine how that went...

One house in the large HOA nearby has a Skelly that's been wrapped in muslin or something - looks like a shroud. Their former neighbors, who unfortunately have moved away, used to have several 8-foot tall witches dancing around a cauldron - I think the whole think was lit up at night. A house up the street has a life-sized witch on a broom suspended by wire - it looks like she's really flying. Apparently that HOA encourages the decorations as long as they're taken down in a reasonable amount of time.

Part of the article made it sound like some people were keeping up the decorations just to needle their HOAs' boards. These are people I do not want for neighbors.

The developer probably already
Knows this , the descendants of the persons laid to rest the said cemetery have rights to the gravesite . They cannot be restricted from access . An egress ingress easement most likely is recorded , from a public ROW to the cemetery for such access , so the descendants won’t have to jump fences or ass through someone’s backyard. There s also an organization ( s) that will adopt these cemetery and maintain at no charge , weeding , mowing etc .

I'm sure some people do it just to be jerks, and that's one of the problems of forming a business relationship with random people. Somebody should point out to them that tacky crap lowers the resale value of their homes - it literally costs them money.

Neither do I. But I still got 'em.

It was one of those things where people who didn't see it every day thought it was cute. People who lived nearby hated it.

"Skelly", huh? I'm not a fan. I mean, I like things a little weird. But (IMHO) it's ugly and tacky, and I don't think it's especially clever, but I'd be okay with it as an occasional joke, like: it goes up at Halloween, taken down soon after, re-appears at Thanksgiving for a few days wearing a puritan hat, taken down after a few days, and so on. Strangely enough, getting it taken down was one of our few successful enforcement actions - it took a couple of serious Lawyer Letters but they took it down. And yeah, as I was privy to the correspondence I can say: it was pretty obviously a case of "HOA-baiting".

And, since it was a violation matter, we couldn't even tell the people who complained about it that we'd gone to a lot of effort to push the owners to take it down.

And oh joy, Halloween is very near{1}. I wonder if they'll bring it out again.

Bill

{1} Don't get me wrong; I *love* Halloween.

We have no problems with seasonal decorations here as long as you take them down after the season.

I love walking down one of our streets and seeing the blow up alien one person has and the cobwebs another person put in their front area for Halloween.

I told them if anyone complains, tell them to come see me because we are allowed!!!

I have been half tempted to buy that multi colored LED light kit on Amazon and put it on my house.
The lights are attached to a controller that can make the LED's virtually any color you want for any holiday.
Red, White and Blue for Independence Day, Orange for Halloween, Red and Green for Christmas.
The LED's are on a flat strip that can easily attach to the eave or overhang on a house.
