Has anyone installed Speed Humps & Spike Strips in their community? Has the board spoken to the insurance company? The HOA Attorney? Located in Florida. Thank you.

Traffic calming devices in the nature of speed humps or speed bumps do cause issues and are loved by those who don't cross them everyday and hated by those who do cross them everyday.

I know that it slows (a little, not a lot) response time for first responders.
I know they can cause more frequent maintenance on motor vehicles (alignments, etc.).

I would expect the community to be divided on the issue.

Spike strips, to my understanding are for directional control at entrances (go in this entrance and out that one).
Some are destructive and some are not (or not as destructive).

I would seek legal advice prior to installing spike strips.

Some references that might help:

I see one link is broken (Seattle Washington). Sorry about that.

I would speak to the insurance company and the HOA Attorney for insight. There are apparently actual "HOA road spikes" that will damage tires but aren't actually dangerous, sharp or spike-like.

Our county will not allow speed humps on county roads, which would include our community as we are in an unincorporated county area, not in city limits. Does your community own their roads? Usually only applicable to private streets like inside of a gated community

We have a few speed bumps that were put in 20 years ago when the roads were completed. We will not be allowed to keep them when the roads are refinished soon, according to the engineering company we have hired. My understanding is that the fire department does not like them. We are looking to replace them with pre-fab speed humps that can be removed if necessary.

I would check with your county roads department. Ours is very helpful.
