Is there such a thing as a class, seminar or workshop that board members can take to learn

1. What the organizing docs say/mean/require
2. How to effectively (and properly) operate
3. Speaks of liability and consequences

I am the Secretary of a small condo HOA. Having a career as a legal secretary focusing in litigation I know just enough to realize actions of our Prez, VP and the Board as a whole aren’t proper. I bring my concerns to the table, but can’t seem to break the choke hold of genuine ignorance that I believe is hampering members and opening us up to (worst case scenario) lawsuits based of lack of fiduciary duty and allowing the community to fall into a bad place.

My hopes would be that I can find s class for each of us to attend that brings to light what we’re doing wrong and how to improve. If it based on GA HOA and condominium act laws that would be preferred.

Does such a thing exist?

Sadly no. What you got is your documents. The only requirement to be in a HOA is to be an owner. (Exceptions exist longer story...) That is why many of us are here. We learn from each other. Most of us are on a board or have been. Life experience is what guides many of us.

This is one of the few websites involving HOA that seems to educate people in HOAs. It is not for complaining without giving resolution options. I would look at other topics and feel free to ask questions. Keep it as anonymous as possible. Set up a fake email address. Do not give out names of the HOA or members. Think may find we bicker with each other but still cars about education and support.

An Introduction to Community Association Living

Governance Guidelines

Best practices Reports from Foundation for Community Association Research

Georgia Chapter - CAI - Education Costs Money

HOA Board Training: Board Basics You Tube - I have no idea how good the info is.

Our attorney also used to run free classes (once a year or so). You might want to see if yours also has classes or a blog on the subject.

In my area at least two management companies offer periodic seminars that include board member training. Obviously they are looking to pick up new customers, but there requirement to become their customers to attend.

Escaped former treasurer and director of a self managed association.
