Thank you. You wonder if anyone has gotten any business from spammers? Or do people just fall for the "If you call this number we will take you off our list"?

I remember reading an article about why a lot of spam is so obvious and stupid or contains poor grammar and spelling mistakes. The spammers specifically target the folks who are naive or clueless enough to fall for the nonsense - otherwise they have to work too hard to trap a few victims.

My employer makes us sit through training sessions every year. (They also periodically send out emails to try to trick us - whoever falls for the tricks receives extra training.) Some of the attempted security breaches can be quite sophisticated and can target particular companies. Scary stuff, some of it.

They did that too with us. I would get the phone calls asking if it was okay to open. I asked my boss just to double check. Figured out it was a test. I tell them to look at the clues and delete it. A few did open it...

My beef is those stupid "25 questions" quizzes on social media. I tell people stop answering them it is a hacker tool. I would get argued with. 3 days later that same person posts they got hacked ..

I think a poster here may be bringing in the spam by association. They do not know they been hacked. Which then bleeds over to anything they touch with their information.

Or they are simply bots posting the spam.

In both recent cases, a new poster re-activated an old thread and their posts along with the spam showed up around 7:30 AM eastern time. The first time the person was clearly spamming us, today's newbie posted what seemed like a serious answer to the question. But who knows? I assume that the mods here could tell if those two posters had the same IP address andr whatnot.

I missed all of it. Was the spam attached to "Aurelia's" post saying she heard a director had disabled Fox News from the clubhouse TV? If so, why would the entire thread be deleted?

That is why I suspect a poster brought the bots with them. Probably unaware. They can attach to an email address.

I thought Aurelia's post was real, that sounded like something that could happen in a clubhouse nowadays.

I don't have the tools to analyze this stuff, and the moderators do. But the last two times we've had this there was a brand new poster who activated old threads, and the junk posts hit the queue before 8 AM eastern time. The first time the new poster clearly posted spam, the second one posted what seemed like a serious response, but if you check the link inside one of the responses (there were three) it allegedly took you to a site that allegedly sells above ground pools. (I didn't click on the link, I assumed that it would download malware onto my computer.) You'll see the most recent reactivated thread if you look in the current queue, it still appears on the first page of threads as of 7 AM eastern today.

These last two instances may have involved folks who unknowingly had infected computers that spewed the junk messages, but I'm not willing to give them the benefit of the doubt since their "serious" posts in the old threads were also spam. Could be coincidence. Could be bots. Could be AI messing with our heads...

My posts to Aurelia's thread built on the political theme that IMO her first post began. I like that the thread was deleted.

I appreciate that this site largely steers clear of "politics". With something like the original post, it's hard to tell if the poster wants to discuss the topic as an HOA issue or is just trying to start a fight. We get into enough fights over HOA issues, thankyouverymuch, we don't need to throw politics on top of it.

I expect Aurelia hoped people would view the topic of her thread as neither political nor controversial.

Perhaps she got a lesson in reality.

Some gyms and fitness centers have eliminated all cable news channels, partly because of the controversy. This is what I advise for HOAs.

I have learned what one claims another political party does is exactly what they themselves are doing. It is so weird to me. Like complaining about certain news channels support certain political views. Just turn it off and stop obsessing over it.

My mother taught me the best thing ever. That is NEVER tell anyone who you vote for. That is between you and the ballot. Of which you get one.

I grew up in a liberal democratic family. However until recently I was a Republican. So I seen both sides of the politics. At the end of the day I do not love based on whom you vote for. It is your actions and words that get my vote to keep you in my life...

As I recall, "Aurelia" claimed she "heard" that "a director had deleted Fox News" from the or a clubhouse TV. That was a red flag to me immediately since she didn't say she confirmed the absence, nor, of course, who turned it off IF it was off. She refused to answer my question about her confirming the network was deleted. Imo, her post was political is the sense she wanted to arouse senses of unfairness among some readers here, yet without evidence. If she's real, she might let us know today.

Meanwhile, her post did, um, inspire a strong political opinion and another fantasized about board action to eliminate that network from a common area. I'm guessing that's the reason the post was deleted. I think, though, the mods should let us know the reason.

I gave the example of some years ago during a national election period, an unknown resident disabled a different cable news channel from our 4 TVs in our gym. Residents complained to our PM, who rectified the situation immediately.

I too have heard that some gyms/fitness centers across the country have eliminated all cable news from their facilities. With an historic trial in GA being televised soon, I wonder how HOA gyms will fare. Clubhouses too, I suppose.

The mods deleted the Aurelia thread for precisely the same reason that HOA Boards should delete cable news channels from a clubhouse TV.

If you report an issue to the mods, sometimes they will give some feedback via email if your HOAtalk account lists an email address.

FWIW, I regularly watch a few YouTube channels where people can respond during live streams. All of the channels use mods to monitor the live responses - the mods will keep things civil and can even delete posts and block posters who are trying to start trouble. You have to do something like this, or the bad actors will take over and ruin the channel - you'd have social media in all of its less attractive glory. There are also many YouTube "regulars" who post during live broadcasts and who help keep discussions civil.

Other than robo-responses, the moderator has never responded to any violation of TOS that I reported. Why the moderator deleted the Aurelia thread was deleted is obvious to me. "The best laid plans of mice and men" sometimes implement perfectly.

Just for laughs, I actually went to the Spam Museum last Saturday. It had a display where visitors could simulate making a can of Spam. I made a can of Spam in 30 seconds. Does that make me a Spammer?
