Our HOA is still developer controlled/owned. Plus we have a terrible MC... Well it appears the "violation" police is out issuing out fines. Someone who has a basketball goal in their driveway was issued one. They went off on our FB page. This then triggered the whole "Can't wait till we own the HOA so we can get X amenities"... It should be noted that we are allowed to own basketball goals but they have to be put out of view once done or kept in back yard. I reminded this person and they accused me of insulting them...

So now these people are wanting a pool, a fishing pond, clubhouse, or a playground. I gently mentioned that if they wanted these things we have to pay for them. The HOA is ONLY funded by it's members for it's members. A pool and pool house alone could be 100K. A playground around 20K. A clubhouse could be $300 K as it's what houses are selling for in the area.

The response was painful and hilarious. Many are saying my numbers are "made up". I've priced out a playground and 20K is conservative. The funniest response yet? "Our dues already pay enough to afford these things"... Uhm... We pay $150 a YEAR! How in the world do we have $100K in our budget to purchase a pool/Pool house?

It does look like getting the fact that people VOLUNTEER for their HOA may be getting through. It's just so painful to listen so some of these people get no grasp of time, money, and effort a HOA takes...

Sorry had to vent and let it out... It's like watching a slow train wreck...

Based on what you provided, it sounds like those posting on social media have never lived in an HOA before.

The pain may be real, but the learning curve might kill you.

You hit the nail on the head Tim. New people to a HOA. Young couples with kids. They have no clue on budgeting.

My favorite parts are the ones that claim " I will pay a thousand dollars a month if I get this X amenities". I am like what about everyone else? Told them we have to pay an extra $200 a month that if missed can lien or foreclosure for.

No one wants to listen to reality. I did see a few ex board members click like to my posts as they seen it before.

Yesterday someone decided to go shooting a gun in the field behind our neighborhood. I swear never seen so many people clutch their pearls in my life! It was behind my house and I just took a nap...

Melissa,
This is exactly why I do not have any presence on FB. It would drive me crazy to read crazy people give their opinions. I think all of your projected costs are probably only the very low side. I guess would be an area that had all the amenities you mentioned if you even have the land to put in on would be well over 1 million dollars. Not sure how many homes but if you divide that number by the number of homes that would be the projected cost. They would also have to setup reserves to cover the replacement costs in the future.

My question for you is why the developer did not provide these Amenities when they started the development? It is much easier for them to tack it on the cost of every home than ask owners to reach into their pockets.

The reason I moved there was because no amenities but retention ponds. Which now the neighbors want to turn into real ponds that hold water... Told them they have to get aeration, electric, and find permission from the city or county... Plus did not mention the houses would flood if we did that...

I agree my estimates are really low. It is just to introduce them to the concepts.

We have two developers in our hood. The bad one owns the HOA. There is no open land to put any amenities. They are still building out. Doubt they would stop to use rear of land to do amenities.

I am hoping they get a bit of a taste of reality to realize "hey if I want this have to get others to agree and fork out several hundred dollars a month to get it".

They do not know how much this terrible MC is protecting them from seeing the light...

Melissa,
That makes it even funnier that they want all of the Amenities and they do not even have the Open Space for them to go. The Bad Builder you mention is surely not going to give up homes for Amenities at this point. I would love to ask you FBers if they want the Amenities on the other side of town since you don't have the land in your HOA?

Oh it is funny watching them go back and forth where the amenity will go. I sometimes add a little fuel on that fire. Is it wrong to suggest the "sign" they want be put inside the front retention pond on a fountain? 😂

Honestly there are days... I still getting over the "we should have enough dues to pay for a pool...' what? 150 a year and like 200 houses? Plus complaining about the 15K we pay the MC? Do realize it takes 100 houses paying just to pay the MC???!

Ill go one farther, we have one of those keyboard warriors that never come to HOA meetings, but they sure hell fire
can hymn and haw about the cable utility vault cover missing 1/3rd of the plastic. They think it's the HOA's responsibility
to have it replaced or keep calling every day to the cable utility until it is fixed.

We have people who want "Speed humps" installed. Our city no longer does that. Plus we don't have enough traffic flow to require it. So what they did is add "Traffic islands". We have the largest one on my street. The others have smaller ones with sidewalk/cross walks cutting across them. The people here can't seem to understand that these were installed to control and slow traffic. They think they are to hide the sewer pipe or are just dumb.

My neighbors are the worst about them. They are so angry they have it behind their driveway they will actually PARK in the one lane! This blocks ALL traffic in our hood. Mind you it's not like they can't park in their driveway or garage. Sometimes the neighbors will park on top or in front of it. Heaven forbid you tell them NOT to park blocking the lane because a school bus can not pass... Oh no we are awful people who can't respect their friends being over for their birthday....

The neighbors want those removed and want speed humps instead.... This is another cringeworthy experience some have yet to experience...
