In a different post, RobertW asks about qualifying candidates for electing board members/directors. Below is the cover sheet that candidates must complete and sign in my HOA. The next page is their Candidate Statement in which they tell voters about themselves, and suggest what they might do to support their HOA. It's the only page sent to the membership. It's just a sample that we've used for many years and have tweaked many times.

Before we limited the length of the Candidate Statement, for instance, we actually received two 6-page C.Vs that blabbed on & on about the person's achievements going back 20 years! So a word limit and page limit (ONE!) is important and also saves money as these must go to voters by US mail, at least in CA.

I hope it's helpful or at least gives ideas about what current boards might want candidates to inform the membership.

I wish we’d had candidate statements. All 5 incumbents nominated themselves and none submitted a candidate statement.

I'm curious what would happen if a candidate refused to sign that document, and simply provided a one-page signed statement nominating themselves. Do your bylaws provide the current board with the power to reject their candidacy?

We have a very similar 2-page candidate statement, and it looks like your 'suggested format' is exactly what we use.

D. State why you should be elected to the Board of Directors.

The first page which is signed, just contains some background info. Name, address, and a statement that you are in fact an owner.

In years past, when our current Board of Directors weren't really interested in holding an election, because that way they can just retain their seats for not meeting quorum, they would only fill out the first page and leave the second page blank.

For *some reason* this year, when they sent out the info to the homeowners, they also included the first page which has the candidate's address, phone number, email address, etc...

Did anyone run against them?

Interesting question, David. In the 17 years I've been an owner here-- board member for 14--no candidate refused to sign. I guess because ownership is a state requirement and directors, per our declaration, have the power to enforce the governing docs. Enforcing doesn't mean reporting, but if a violation has been corroborated by our PM, th Board must enforce it as it sees fit based on the alleged violator's hearing remarks, etc.

The Board did establish a policy long ago that candidates must complete the form and the Candidate Statement.

While we have tweaked the front page over the years, James, I believe the pages came to us from our MC, which has offices all over CA. Perhaps now or at one time, your HOA was/is managed by the same MC. OR, I wonder if CAI has samples.
