At the bottom of each reply to a post there's an area where you can attach two files - I've had trouble attaching pictures, jpeg files - has anyone had a similar issue or does anyone know if there's only a specific type of file that is acceptable ?

I don't open attachments on the internet. They are not trustworthy and can spread viruses. So if attached doesn't mean someone will open it. You may try to change the file type to .pdf at the end for uploading if you want to do it.

I've attached a pdf without any issue. But there may be size limits that are stopping you.

Melissa makes a good point about opening stuff on the internet. My computer scans files before opening, but it's a constant battle between more capable malware and more capable anti-malware. I'm somewhat less concerned here since the file will be attached to a message in an ongoing discussion rather than just showing up in the email inbox, but nothing is risk free.

200 kilobytes per attachment is the limit, the last time I checked. For me, PDF files under this limit have always attached. I tried to attach a jpg and jpeg file, and the HOATalk software would not let me. One can convert jpg and jpeg to pdf files using free online converters.

Thanks for all the replies - jpeg isn't acceptable even though my files are under 200Kb and I'm leery about downloading free pdf conversion software from the internet .

DonaldN, one does not have to download software. One just uses sites like this:

https://pdfsimpli.com/lp/jpg-to-convert

I have used the above site and other free sites for jpg to pdf conversions many times, with no consequences.

You can probably convert from jpeg/jpg with tools you have on your computer. Double click the file in explorer, this will display the file in Windows Paint or Picture and fax viewer unless you have some other program install to handle images. In any case, choose the "print" function in that program. In Picture Viewer, you will choose the ... icon on top of the page to get to the print function. Control-P will usually provide access to print in most programs. Choose "Microsoft Prnt to pdf" (or similar) as your printer. Press the print button, enter the output PDF file name and directory, verify the PDF is under 200k, and attach to a post.

Adobe has a free pdf program. We use PDF Exchange at work. Great program, no issues with many years of usage.

Open a new Word document (or Google Docs equivalent).

Insert jpg into document.

Save document as pdf.

Maybe resize the photo?

Seriously, I use an *old* Microsoft photo editing product and it can resize photos just fine. A phone that's producing high-res photos should have apps aplenty that can do this.

My old laptop running Windows 10 also allows me to right-click on a photo and convert it to a PDF.

There are *many* ways to deal with size and formatting issues.

sure there are, but you are forgetting who is asking the question, someone that appears to not be as tech savy as us, they want a simple solution like uploading a file to a website and copying the code, not learning how to resize it, convert it to pdf etc. I tried it before. took 4 times to get it small enough. this website oic posting ability is a joke.

I don't personally like viewing or looking at attachments on this website. It's not a feature that I use myself. It's too risky for viruses.

Currently the attachment has to be a PDF file - I took a couple of pictures of my TH neighborhood for JohnC to check out and they were JPEG - I asked for help from tech support for this forum and got great assistance in having my two JPEG files converted to PDF .

So I understand the copy & paste part but what is meant by compress photo and is it a feature within Word or are you talking zip file ?

It's a feature within word.

Double click (right click) on the picture to bring up the picture tools.
Within those tools is the compress picture button (see attached)

Thanks for the tip - I've got version 2016 and the conversion tools are there under different names but outcome
the same - nice to know for this forum but unfortunately some members here and on the internet in general are
wary of opening attachments - the pic of the Falls is neat and thanks for the screen shot :-) .
