Looking for feedback re: establishing EV charging stations to accomodate resident electric vehicles. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Is thus a building, single family detached homes, or townhouse community? What you have will impact the observations, so being more specific in what you're looking for would be a good start

Anyway, start with polling the community to see if there's even interest in doing it. Talking to your local utility about installation and what that might entail (not to mention the cost) will also help. The price will change as electric cars get more popular (and hopefully cheaper), so if the interest isn't there right now, you could table the matter for a few years and take it up again at that time.

If you're in a building or townhouse community, parking may be more of a factor and things could get complicated if you don't have much to begin with. In an underground parking garage, there could be an issue with some trying to charge up the car using community property electricity (those without electric cars won't be happy). And what do you do if the charger us on community property, but someone gets behind in paying assessments?

Those are just some things you may need to consider.

This is a timely topic as I was just coming to post something similar. We are a multi building low rise development with non assigned community parking. We do have enough space to dedicate some to EV charging spots. Our owners have individual garages but the garages are on a community meter and not wired to handle EV charging nor do we want that to be a community expense.

Have any of your associations installed central EV chargers? Do you own these or contract with a company? If you own them do you make any money, break even or subsidize the cost of charging? Any other things to think about?

depends heavily on how your utility charges for electricity and how expensive it is to install them. A charger 5 feet away from a main breaker panel will be realtively cheap to install vs a charger located 500 feet away. you really just gotta get the quotes and do the math. sometimes the math works out so that it's not economically viable. you'd have to charge so much that it woudl be cheaper to drive a gas guzzler.
