Short survey, if you please?

Does your community pool have a “cleaning day” when it is closed for cleaning and maintenance? If so: what day of the week is it?

Our pool cleaning day is Monday. And on every Memorial Day for at least the past 3 years, there has been a ‘problem’ and the gate access system has prevented people from accessing the pool. The pool cleaner knows not to clean that day. And despite me calling and reminding the PMC on the preceding Thursday or Friday - “something happens” and the gate system locks up the pool Monday.

I’ll spare you the Extended-Play version of this rant. In short, I’m wondering about changing “pool cleaning day” to Wednesday. Labor Day and Memorial Day are always on Mondays. We’d only need to hassle with the gate system for Juneteenth (Wednesday June 17 2024) and Independence Day (Wednesday July 4 2029).

I’ve not yet talked to the pool guy. Someone has told me “but it needs to be on Monday because the pool gets extra dirty on the weekend.” This may be true - but I’m inclined to think that somebody just chose Monday at random years ago, and we’ve been living with the consequences ever since.

It is usually Monday but for Holidays. Which I would write into the contract. It makes no sense for a pool cleaner to come on a holiday unless for emergency.

I would make it a Tuesday or a Thursday for regular cleaning if want to change it altogether. Tuesday would be good for after holiday. Thursday good for pre holiday. Which way want to go prevent or clean it?

I agree: Why not Tuesday?

This is a 25-yard pool with several lanes, right? Else I do not know why a swim team would want to use it. That's a big pool. I do not envy your (all-volunteer) responsibility here. Glad you turned the swim team down (no ifs, ands or buts) and spared yourself even the possibility of a lot more work.

Our regular pool cleaning day is Monday, both because it needs to be cleaned after the heavy usage on the weekend and because it is usually the lowest attendance day. When a holiday falls on a Monday, the pool cleaning day shifts to Tuesday for that week and that info is published on our pool schedule that is sent out at the start of each swim season and is available on our community website. We also program our gate access system to be in sync with the Monday holidays so that the gate opens on those days for those that have access devices once the dead bolt lock is opened by the lifeguards when they open the pool on those days in the morning. If your system does not allow programming for "special" days like a Monday holiday, you can consider an Open Swim Day and leave the gate open for all on those days. People still sign in at the lifeguard desk, but it avoids having to reprogram your access system for the holiday.

Bill, How is your gate lock software system set up? Besides telling the scheduling software to exclude a specific day of the week, are you able to set the schedule
to keep the gates open to exclude specific days in that schedule?

Before we finally closed our pool, we moved the open hours to the weekends - partly because that fit the pool monitor's schedule and scheduled cleaning for Monday - Wednesday, depending on the contractor's schedule. Personally, I think Monday makes more sense because during the week, people are busy with work and some kids may be in summer school, so you might not have a lot of use anyway. Weather can also be a factor - if you have a thunderstorm or something, you'll have to change the day anyway so you might want a cushion of two or three days to play with.

Then again, I'm in the Midwest and Texas is rather - warm during the summer.....

Our two pools are never closed for cleaning. We have a pool tech who comes by every day but Sunda and brushes the sides and tile. A water sample gets taken and the chemicals are adjusted. The filters are cleaned and the pool is completely vacuumed about once a week. If we end up with some kind of algae that requires special treatment, we will close for a day or two - but that's only once or twice a year.

I don't understand why you have to close the pool for an entire day?

Thanks all!

Okay, so it sounds like there is more than just random behind cleaning the pool on Monday. So I'm going Plan B, which is to get access to the gate control system so I can DIY it. I've read the manual for the system, it's made by "Wall Queen" or someone. I'd call it 'baroque' as software goes. Our PM has agreed to look into giving me access to (yet another) system - it'll be interesting to see how that goes - there's always the chance that the PMC's systems guys will go into a dither over it: "Oh no! We can't give him access to *that*!" Yeah, my HOA owns the gate and the pool, but they may or may not have bothered to set up the system so that it supports multiple users, each with their own ACL.

We never close our pool either, which is open 24/7/365 from 5am - 10pm. Our pool guy is here more often than 1X week and usually really early, like 6am.

Oh: why not Tuesday? (or Thursday?) Because Independence Day this year falls on a Tuesday. And it doesn't fall on a Wednesday until 2029. And (at least this year) the local school district declares both Labor Day (Monday 4 September) and Day After Labor Day (Tuesday 5 September) as holidays. And Independence Day 2024 is a Thursday. Alas, Juneteenth of 2024 falls on a Wednesday - but that's the last time we have to screw around with the pool gate system until 2029. And by 2029, they may well have replaced the pool and the gate with some kind of sophisticated hydrogen-powered aerial swimming pool system, and / or the Germans might make a 3rd and successful bid for world dominance and decide to make swimming illegal again like they did in 1883, and / or it turns out that 5 years after a person recovers from COVID, they develop a telekinetic flight ability and the pool gate becomes largely irrelevant.

BillD16, I was operating on the assumption that you either did not have the power to control the gate access system, or that did you not want to add this to your duties.

You're correct on both counts.

Memories of opening the pool and maintenance... Our pool house also doubled for the bathrooms for the Pool attendees and Lawncare. Also our Pool caretaker cleaned the bathrooms on the day they came in. (Monday LOL). I worked 2nd shift and got off at 2 am. The pool person came around 7 or 8 am. The lawncare people came around Wednesdays/Thursdays around 9 am. The pool opened around 10 AM everyday and closed at various times in the evening up to 10 PM.

Guess who had the key to the bathroom/clubhouse? Another reason why I slept only 4 hours a day! The "lucky" days were when someone had an "accident" at the pool and we had to shock it. Which forced closing it for 24 hours at times. Everyone called to find out why the pool was closed...

I loved having access to a pool. However, it is one of those things that can destroy a person's soul... or atleast it is a portal to H#LL...

It really distresses me, but - yeah.

The pool is our neighborhood's only amenity, and I voluntarily took on the job of 'bringing the pool back' after COVID and no lifeguards and with the new PMC and etc - there's no-one else to do it! And it has proved to be a massively unsatisfying task that has introduced me to the very worst sides of many of my neighbors' personalities. I'm not giving up yet, but I confess I've found myself pondering the notion.

No pity, please. I've dealt with far worse situations in the past. But - I don't claim to understand this - the pool has a lot in common with air travel, in that it seems to bring out the very worst in people.
