My husband is on the Board as Secretary, last evening at a community meeting I was told that I could not vote on a project because of his position.
My I understanding is that when we are voting on items in a community meeting each unit has one vote. Is my right to vote superseded by
my husbands position? If it helps we live in Washington State.

Check your documents. If your community has one vote per unit, co-owners must decide among themselves who will cast the vote, so you and your husband should have discussed that before the meeting as to which one of you would do that. The issue you're voting on may also play a role. If it's a formal vote regarding an amendment to the CCRs, for example, you only have one vote.

We do have one vote per unit in our governing documents. We were voting on a community project, each unit voted. I was voting for our unit, I was stopped by o e person that said since my husband was in the Board I could not vote. It wasn’t the board voting, it was the community members.

Please let us know what a "community meeting" is, Kathy. Is is a meeting of the members (owners)? Do owners usually vote on "projects" at your HOA? Was this an oral vote of some kind?

If owners do get to vote, Shelia is most likely right depending on your governing docs--one vote per unit. As she wrote, you & he need to agree on how to vote for your unit or home.

I think your & my posts crossed, Kathy. Assuming your husband did not vote at this meeting, then you may since there may be one vote per unit. HOW was the voting don? WHO in the world stopped you??? HOW did they stop you?

When there are projects that need to be done, the HOA comes together for what we call a community meeting
Projects are presented to the entire HOA and each project is either approved or not by owners. Not the Board
Unless it’s under a certain threshold. The projects presented were more than the Board could approve. Each
Unit has one vote, and that was what we were doing when one individual stopped the proceeding and said
Kathy cannot vote, her husband is voting as a Board member. But that’s not true, no other Board member was
Told their spouse could not vote, just me. The person that stated this is not in the Board, he is just an owner.
I hope this clarifies what I’m trying to ask. Thanks

I think both Shelia & I answered your question, Kathy. Did the meeting chair tell the bully owner that s/he was wrong? Did you vote?

You probably have the information your HOA's bylaws or perhaps your CC& Rs (covenants, declaration).
