I mailed holiday greeting cards to some owners and received positive feedback from them. Would like to do the same for a new owner. What would you write in it that is half welcome and half PR?

For new owners, our management company sends out a Welcome Packet along with a $100.00 Home Depot gift card. The PR works wonders.

I've seen welcome packets like Max described, which you can buy from some office supply companies and companies that sell supplies and equipment to multi-family communities (condos, apartments, etc). Get thee to Google to find some companies.

As for the letter you can say general stuff like: Welcome to the community, we're glad you're here and looking forward to getting to know you and your family. Enclosed is an owner's handbook - if you have questions about anything in it, please don't hesitate to give our property manager a call. Our next board meeting is (DATE, TIME) and you're welcome to attend, blah, blah, blah. Just keep it short for now and make sure your owner's handbook has information like the web address of the website, the current issue of the newsletter if you have one and a contact information page listing local community resources, along with the property manager's address, phone number and that stuff.

A personal welcome letter from me only, not from the Board or management company. The purpose would be friendliness/hospitality as well as PR for myself and the community.

A personal welcome from a homeowner is a bit different from a welcome from the HOA. The HOA knows that a new person is moving in, and it's good business to make sure the newbie is informed about what's going on. In short, there is a business reason for it. A personal welcome from a random neighbor may land differently - as in "who is this person, how did they get my information?"

I think that for every person who would welcome the contact, someone else may feel icky about it. This will depend on whether your HOA is in Mayberry RFD or it's in a city where people need to be more security conscious. It may also depend on where the new person moved from and what their expectations are. Know your audience, in other words - and that's hard to do with a stranger.

Does PR mean publicity or promotion vs. "public relations?"

Basically communicating what a great community we live in and how I am a long term resident and volunteer. Guess I answered my own question LOL.
