I was appointed just a few days ago to the BOD. The next open meeting had already been set for next Friday at the last Open meeting and was referred to at our Annual Meeting. Now our manager has dropped the ball and didn't send out the notice to our community (despite the fact I reminded her with an item I wished to have on the Agenda). She claims her 'assistant' neglected to send the notice or add at to her calendar. That's OK - everyone can make a mistake.

Now we have to reschedule. I made adjustments to my schedule to attend my first board meeting. Our vice president has suggested they go ahead without me as I will be having surgery next week and will be in hospital on the date suggested. To say I am livid is an understatement but my hands are tied.

Is there anything I can do to push for a mutually acceptable date?

One thing (out of many) you'll learn being on the board is that sometimes shit happens (same as everything else in life). I realize you really want to attend so you can start seeing what goes on and to contribute, but your health is more important, so take care of that. It's mid-February as I write this and we have 8 more months of 2023 for you to attend meetings.

Depending on the time of the meeting, it might be possible for you to call and listen in to the proceedings. If not, call the vice president as soon as you're able for a recap. In fact, he or she could send you a detailed email on what was discussed. If you have questions, you can bring them to the next meeting.

Patience is all I can say.

Years ago, when I first joined the Board, the then-President cancelled a number of Board meetings 5 minutes before the meeting. This was frustrating as I spent several hours preparing for the meeting and then to have it cancelled last minute was deflating. After this happened a few times, I got annoyed and was rebuffed. Eventually the former President quit the Board and that problem went away.

It was scheduled for Fri. 2/15? All that was needed (in CA) was a notice & agenda posted in a common area that's designated for such postings. No need to "send it out."

But if it wasn't posted, then you just need to beg the prez to set a date that you can attend. Is this an organizational meeting when the Board chooses officers? You were just elected, right?

Your can present your agenda item at the next open meeting.

lt was the Friday 17th

It wasn't

No need to "send it out."
We normally post on the notice board and also the website which sends it to all members.

But if it wasn't posted, then you just need to beg the prez to set a date that you can attend.

Is this an organizational meeting when the Board chooses officers?
No, we had that immediately following the Annual Meeting.

You were just elected, right?
Correct.

Your can present your agenda item at the next open meeting.
