There are plenty of resources on the web (both good and bad).
Of course, reading and understanding your governing documents and applicable statutes (property and corporate) will go a long way and should be the first thing you do.

The best starting point in my opinion is to read once quickly (skim) the HOA's Declaration, Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws. Focus on where the language suggests board involvement may be needed; highlight those sections and re-read them. Those are your duties. At least skim the Missouri nonprofit corporation statute, as this will likely apply to your HOA; see https://revisor.mo.gov/main/OneChapter.aspx?chapter=355 . Proceed to Tim's list, keeping in mind what you already read in the HOA's Declaration, Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws.

Recognize that the only dumb question is an unasked one. Before doing anything major, consider running it by the forum here, or search the archives. Long-time posters here have served on HOA and condo boards many years and more or less have collective wisdom (or viewpoint diversity that can help too) on certain broader, non-legal topics and some of the legalities as well.

Of Tim's links, I recommend at least skimming this one in particular https://whoawv.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/hoa-board-member-toolkit-_-cai.pdf

I confess I am not wild about the others. But that's just myself.

Can you clarify, Julie? I can get how those who reply think you want to learn the ropes about being an assn. director. But do you possibly mean how do you apply or get voted in to be a trustee?

Btw, before I became a director years ago, I read the "Board Members Toolkit." It helped me become a director immensely. Along with the docs ElleN noted, the Assn. Rules & Regulations and Architectural Guidelines, or similar, also are extremely important. In my HOA and in man they, too, are governing documents.

Define what you mean by Trustee. Do you mean as elected to the BOD (often called a Director) or as a PM?

A trustee in some associations can be known as an owner. Most associations will define their governing body as a Board of Directors, while other associations ( and many state-specific) may define their governing body as a Board of Trustees.
