Is anyone else having issues with members trying to connect their devices (laptops, DVRs, VCRs) to your television in the clubhouse? With the continued acceleration of technology, we are struggling with being able to effectively support member's desires to connect to the television. We've purchased several HDMI cables and because of the lack of technical knowledge from members, they have been disconnected and in many cases removed (either accidentally or intentionally). Our clubhouse is used quite frequently and we would really like to support our members needs but struggling with how to do this effectively. Looking for any suggestions with how your HOA has handled this.

BUY A dvd player, they are cheap.
tell people they will have to buy a usb to hdmi adapter to use their laptop with the TV and you will not provide technical support.
too many people are absolutley clueless when it comes to AV and computers.

The only device connected to the tv would be a dvd-bluray player. No member should be allowed to connect anything additional to the tv.

Unless that is a streaming TV, it is just a viewing device. Just a larger screen option.

For one, I would have a checklist of items provided by the HOA for the clubhouse TV. If those items are not present when the user finishes using the clubhouse you charge them the balance of their deposit to replace the missing item(s)
Second you can buy a AV widget that affixes to the and all the rear connections will be in the front so people don't have to go behind the TV potentially breaking the TV.

Why not just make these connections available? That way people stop plugging them in and out? The cables are "universal". Label them "HDMI" for laptop connection. Sounds like not having this option is causing more wear and tear than just having it hanging there available.

I worked third shift at a place once. We had TV monitors at the end of each aisle to monitor manufacturing numbers. Since it was 3rd my co-workers would often hook up a video game. When the boss came in, we disconnected it. Didn't hurt anything until the boss found out they played video games.

A somewhat inexpensive idea:

Buy the more commonly used cables at sufficient lengths (maybe 8-12') that will connect to inputs in your TV. I recommend only a few: 1-3 HDMI cables, AV (red, white, yellow ends), coaxial, PC w/ audio, USB.

Secure each to the TV with a locking zip tie (to prevent them from being disconnected from TV). Search amazon for these: "Universal HDMI Cable Locking Connector Zip Tie"

Bundle them all together leaving loose lengths at ends so the proper cable can be manipulated by the user. Secure this bundle somewhere/somehow so it is accessible by users and doesn't fall behind whatever your TV is sitting on.

Label the cables with what it is, what input # it is (prob only needed for multiple HDMI cables), and typical use (e.g., HDMI - for laptops, DVD players, gaming systems, etc.).

Create some simple instructions for users:
1. Attach device to proper cable.
2. Select appropriate input on TV.
3. Grab popcorn and watch your show.

Finally threaten to break the walker of anyone who tries bringing and connecting a VCR. Do people still have those? Haha kidding. I would still have one if the wife didn't toss it out behind my back!
