We've had a difficult election. Election was yesterday and I was re-elected to the Board.
During the election, which was awful, many complaints were lodged against the HOA. Mostly they were about how we are not handling finances well, or how our communication is poor, or how we don't document what we do as well as a couple of homeowners would like. I will say that we are careful to follow our by-law, CC&Rs, and our state law. We have not done anything that would get us in trouble in a legal sense. There are things that we have done that have "optics" issues. Each one of the complaints would be fixed if the Board put MORE time into Board stuff. Of course, we all could put more time in at no cost to homeowners, but it's a volunteer gig and most people put minimal time into volunteer gigs like this.
I personally have no more time to give to the HOA. It takes a ton of my personal time (about 15 - 20 hours per week) and simply trying to maintain the status quo is hugely time consuming. I don't expect any of the other Board members to step up to the plate.
Thus, I am thinking we either ignore the homeowner concerns, or try to work with our paid property manager to resolve them, or hire additional professional help to resolve them. I don't think the Board wants to hire anyone, so unless our property manager agrees to do it as part of the existing contract, I think that the homeowner concerns will not be resolved.
I am fine with that - there is only so much we can do.
Curious what others think? It sounds lame to say "I can't fix this problem because I have no time" but that is the reality. It's just a volunteer gig.
