What was it that initially brought you to this forum?

Was it an issue?
Was it looking for general knowledge?
Was it recommended by others?

I mentioned my story recently. I had an issue with my Association and started researching how to resolve it. I found many anti-hoa sites (most of which are no longer around) and stumbled upon this site. The regular posters at the time asked specific questions and didn't always agree with me. However, they were being helpful. Eventually, my issue was resolved, I learned a lot and ended up serving on committees and the Board. With the encouragement of posters on this forum, and support of fellow board members, I was able to initiate many changes that placed my Association in a better place and, hopefully, made it easier for the members and future board members.

So, I initially found this site because of an issue between me and the Board.
I stayed because I made a few friends and continued to gain knowledge and different perspectives on various issues.

Whats the short version of your story?

I was on a few HOA websites that were more complaining than resolving. Plus not any helping people who were board members or wanted to be board members. Most HOA websites are about hating them and their boards. I felt needed a place for board oriented people or those seeking education on HOA should have a place. A place for safe venting or questions.

I think it was the work of many of the OG posters here who made this website that place. It could have been another HOA hater page if not for the need and want for a place for people genuinely interested in how HOA function or operate. We do not always agree or come from the same states etc.. we still want to help those who are striving to learn better ways or do better.

It is extremely hard to participate or be one for the board. It is considered a thankless job. However those who have it can be thankful. Having a supportive place with free advice with good intentions is helping those who want the help and not their will...

Stumbled across it, thought it looked interesting.

I stuck around because it's not a griping site (although we occasionally do gripe), the answers come from experienced directors and community managers, and the conversations are mostly informative and cordial. In fact, I think the level of civility here is pretty unusual for websites that allow users to post. I attribute that in part to the fact that experienced directors and managers know how to behave professionally and don't get drawn into fights whenever somebody wants to pick one. Some posters do have their moments, but it's not the norm. Another unusual thing is that politics rarely comes up, and if it does it seems to be squelched by consensus.

I do hope the owners of the site eventually bring it more up to date, because they have something good going on here.

Thoughtful question, Tim. I found this site while witnessing a disfunctional BOD with no desire to follow (or change) our CCR's, Bylaws, ARC, R/Rs. They knew they had minimal/scant member oversite. Their decisions escalated to neighbor tension, yelling, general discontentment. This was not the neighborhood I had moved into 21 years ago, nor the BOD + committees
I had served 18 years ago. I enjoy HOATALK because I prefer to hear numerous opinions about most subjects. Some are more pertinent than others. BTW, I have returned to our BOD, Pres.,
but am concerned that my 2 colleagues have no desire to read/understand, support our documents.

I came here because of an issue with my HOA. The forum was not what I expected. But it has helped me cope with some of the issues I had in my previous HOA. It's also been a very informative site. I learned so much from it over the years. I have been an off again, on again reader and poster for years. I recently resigned from the forum because one particular poster was so vitriolic and in haste I resigned. But I returned because I enjoy reading and learning about HOA issues. I don't hold grudges so onward.

Excellent question Tim. It has been a while since I last participated here and I enjoyed every moment of it in the past. I have now been elected President of my HOA and my need to better myself in HOA matters has stepped up a knotch. In the past, I don't remember the participants being (uh,,,whata ya call it) reactionary and uh, a bit ill-mannered at times. I don't have a habit of taking things personal but I realize others do. Maybe it's just me...i am old and ugly now - not young, not smart and not good-looking..[smile]... - and maybe I am not keeping up the times. To be honest with you, I used to look forward to logging on here with a bunch of well-intended participants. Hmmm, here lately, not so much now...lol...

I sought a 'reality check' of a particular action a HOA was taking. The check yielded the important reality that HOA boards rarely govern with the competence of a city council or any competence. To enjoy HOA living, accepting this lack of competence is important. The best thing I have taken from this forum's HOA directors, members and managers is to avoid living in a HOA or condo again. If the city where I live pretty much requires HOAs, make sure the HOA has minimal infrastructure to maintain and a tiny budget.

Tim,
Great question.

I first found the site about 14 years ago or so when dealing with a shaky board that I had just became a member of and needed clarity to make sure I was not making bad assumptions. Back then this site was mostly board members and Property managers, and I really gained some much-needed knowledge. It helped center me in my job to save HOA from cratering. I have been an active member over the years but tend not to create posts much anymore. I do like to contribute when the topic is one that I am passionate about and since I do not have any social media accounts this is my outlet for that sort of thing. I have always compared this site to a brotherhood of people that have many of the same highs and lows from our battles. Much like the Police tend to hang out with other officers. We understand each other because many of us have seen it before.

As Jim has mentioned over the last few years the site as slowly changed and become a place where regular owners come to see if they HOA board is right or wrong on their personal issues. Many don't like the advice us old guys give if it is not what they want to hear. They storm off and probably head to FB to get their comfort.

This is still Hands down the best Site on the internet for real solid answers to HOA questions.

I do not remember how I found this site but it was not because of an problem I was having with my HOA. I do enjoy the site and I stay active. I do favor the rights of a BOD.

I found the website while researching something related to my association. I think I'd been on the board for three years at the time and was beginning to participate more in the discussions. At that time our board president took the lead on most issues and the rest of us usually went along with it because generally he knew what he was talking about.

The president did a lot of work for the association and like so many others, he got tired of doing everything and resigned after one meeting when everyone voted against a proposal he wanted. I suspect that was the tipping point.. It was so sudden that's when we realized how much we'd depended on him and we'd have to start figuring out this stuff ourselves.. That's what's what kept me coming back and why I continue to do so.

Ironically, I ended up stepping for the sane reason as the president (who's since returned and is now the treasurer). I've been away for 7 years but suspect I'll return one day. If/when that happens, I want to be to jump in quickly to contribute. In the meantime, participating on this website has been most enlightening. Just when I think my community is messed up, someone will talk about drama in their community and it reminds me that the grass always looks greener on the other side.

It also reminds me that sometimes the grass looks greener because those people put in the work to take care of it. In sum, that's the key to well run well run communities - everyone has to decide what they want their community to be and work towards that end.

Like Shelia, I think I'd been on our board for a few years and realized I needed to learn a lot more about our finances. But we'd also entered into legal action against our developer re: construction defects. I think I was trying to learn more about that topic. Though not finding much here, I did see many other HOA topics of interest so kept coming back.

My wife and I live in a medium sized complex, 90 or so units, with a pool and no other amenities other that green space left after the tennis courts were removed many years ago. It's a townhome community with 2-car detached garages. Our HOA fee was recently increased to $345, which has increased yearly from $285 in the last two years. Water, sewer, trash, etc. are included in the fee, but is there anyone on this forum that has a HOA fee this large for so few amenities? Curious...

Say, Paul it's a good question and would be far more likely to get worthwhile responses if you'd start a new thread.

The amazing website layout. It's so retro and refreshing. Plus the admins dont' allow you to post youtube video links. They just get deleted automatically so that lets the page load faster on my dial up modem. I"m joking! please dont' ban me.

I do find it interesting that they are a web developer and they are not concerned that HOATALK might reflect poorly on their development skills with potential customers. One would think they would either update it or get rid of it. Obviously I hope the plans are to update it.

I was searching for information on hoa problems and procedures. I don't even remember what the initial questions was, maybe something to do with elections and proxies. I stayed because this forum is so valuable! Good information and advice from all over the country.

Yes, it was definitely an issue for me. I've been having issues with a couple of residents and I do so much work as the President! I just needed a support group to help me through this.
