Anyone have any experience with HOA of condos where there is a Electric Vehicle Charging Station available for community use?

We had thought about installing a couple in an available common area spot, but have so much interest that we
are installing them now for about 25 deeded spots. The $ to give us more elect. capacity--to serve 40 parking spots in our underground garage-- was put in the budget for 2022. Owners reserved an EV charges for their spot & paid about 2,200 for their line & charger.

We have 200+ condo units.

Do you have questions?

Plug this into google and you will see there has been a fair amount of discussion on the topic in this forum:

site:hoatalk.com charging station

Here are the first three that popped up for me.

Will the charging station require a credit card or have some way of tracking electricity usage? If not, other owners will probably not be thrilled to subsidize EV drivers. Similarly, will the association foot the bill for installation including possible electrical upgrades needed? Depending on the size of your association, one charger might not be enough and could cause contention.

Thanks

Agree it will cause consternation. The installation cost will be a problem and the possible loss of a parking spot will be a problem. I'm on the Board and told the person inquiring that the first concern would be to make sure the user paid for their electrical usage.

Thanks for the links.

The 1st concern as Douglas and I point out is the cost of expanding the electricity capacity. The 2nd, in MikeB's case is getting owners approval to give up a common area? parking space in exchange for an EV station. Actually measuring usage is pretty easy from what I understand.

Btw, in CA the HOA must permit owners to install an EV charger in their own exclusive use common area parking a space completely at their expense. Don't know about LA.

There are charging stations that can be set up to accept credit card payments.
Might be a way to go.
