We are in process of purchasing new patio furniture for our condo building patio (common element)
Any recommendations on what type of furniture of low maintenance and any experience with patio furniture companies?

Plastic wicker or aluminum tension fabric

Lowes and Home Depot have 50% off around end of august

Naming any specific company/store/manufacturer is against this site's posting rules.

Things to consider, however....

* What's your budget like?

* How sheltered is the patio?

* Do you have to worry about the sun or rain beating the furniture to pieces?

* Do you have to worry about the wind picking it up and slamming it into a window/pool/other structure?

* Do you have to worry about kids or less able people getting tangled up in it?

* What kinds of storage facilities do you have? Do you have to worry about people picking it up and carting it off?

It's hard to make recommendations without knowing what sorts of constraints you're working with.

We are in the process of replacing the furniture for one of our pools. We use aluminum furniture with heavy plastic strapping for both of our pools. The furniture we are replacing is used every day in the hot Florida sun. The frames are at least 8 years old and we had them re-strapped about 4 years ago. I would never buy furniture from a retail outlet like Home Depot or Lowes. The quality is just not there for heavy use. You should contact a commercial pool furniture supplier. The prices are better and the furniture lasts.

If you do a google search for commercial aluminum frame strap chair you will see the type of furniture I am talking about. Very good prices and it lasts a long time.

Spend the money and buy your patio furniture from a pool & patio store that can deliver furniture and works with commercial-type pools. An aluminum-framed w/ plastic strap lounge chair can be rebuilt and refurbished as they discolor, which saves money over the long-term.

However, buy your poolside table umbrellas from the local Big Box hardware stores. I've noticed the "commercial" grade umbrellas don't enjoy better construction or lifespan than a quality umbrella purchased at Lowe's, Home Depot or Ace.

Our aluminum poolside furniture--tables, table chairs, lounge chairs, is 21 years old and has been restrapped twice and is ready for a 3rd re-strapping.

It stays outside 24/7 but weather here is fairly mild though damp (near bay/ocean), but the powder-coated aluminum only needs annual polishing and, of course, occasional paint touch-up.

I second Mark's recommendation especially related to plastic wicker. It's incredibly durable and choosing colors that fade less noticeably (think grey) can help extend enjoyment and replacement time frames.

I just got the quote from our patio furniture supplier. He came and looked at our furniture and told us not to waste money on new frames. Restrapping is half the cost of buying a whole new lounge chair. Cost for restrapping is $100, a new chair is $200. I agree with Kerry that the powder-coated aluminum really holds up well.

Plastic wicker has been very popular for the past few years here, and many of the balconies in my high rise have it. I don't know how durable it is, though. Mary might want to kook into estimated useful life, which they'll need for their Reserve Study anyway.

Valuable points and we have already considered some of them. You are absolutely correct that all these factors would contribute to our selection.

KerryL1,

First of all, I apologize for misspelling your name in my previous reply to you.

Actually, we are having our Reserve Study in August, and this piece of information - the estimated useful life - would be additional benefit for us! Thank you very much for pointed out!
