We have had another occurrence in our neighborhood of graffiti on the wall separating us from a bypass. The police said it wasn't gang related. Our Association has offered a $500 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person/persons involved. The Virginia Department of Transportation gave the police paint to cover the last graffiti, but here it is again. What has worked for you, if it has happened in your area?

We have some that appears to be gang related, and some of a "hate" related basis. We have been painting over it asap.

A screen (line) of picky shrubs - like barberry - can discourage anyone from wanting to go up against a fence

If there isn't a restriction about placing signs, how about planting prickly bushes and pachysandra and a sign stating Poison Ivy, Keep Away!!

The wall is owned by VDOT, not the Association, but we are one ones who see the graffiti.

This is not the only wall they own and not the first time they have had to deal with the problem. Complain to them every time it happens and encourage other residents to do the same. Ask them to plant the sticker bushes in front of the wall if this is possible. Your local or state elected representatives may be willing to help put pressure on VDOT to solve the problem.

Itā€™s certainly unfortunate for members of any HOA community to be faced with such.

I reside in Georgia, and we have had several situations which involved vandalism. Spray painting on our roads (city owned), signs (city will replace), utility boxes and even mail boxes.

The board and their significant others, cleaned all that we could physically. A little ā€œelbow greaseā€, soapy water and some mineral spirits helped remove the majority of the spray paint.

A pressure washer was used to remove the bulk of the vulgarity and obscenities from our fence and entrance sign.

Our city provides a service which has shown to be very beneficial to our residents and a HUGE help to the board.

I would suggest contacting the city/county who ever maintains the by-pass perhaps they can remove the graffiti at no cost to the association.

A pressure washer in unskilled hands can do more damage than the graffiti. It can actually cut concrete and brick. And of course, you should not use one on (or even touch) a wall or surface that belongs to someone else.

You are 100% correct, I too wouldnā€™t pressure wash anything that wasnā€™t personal property of the association. Many pressure washers have ā€œspecialā€ tips that will significantly reduces the amount of water concentrated on any one particular area, therefore not ā€œcuttingā€ through concrete or even bricks, although Iā€™m sure it could!
