My new neighborhood we have an unofficial Facebook page. It is just being used amongst the neighbors to communicate with each other. Recently, we had a poster post that they wanted someone to come get their cat. No big deal normally as cats or dogs escape. We even have 1 dog from a neighbor's house (NOT in the HOA) who has a tag on it's neck stating "I run loose". We are in more open country with open fields around us. Loose pets aren't unusual or even Coyotes. Most neighbors post on the page found your dog/cat or saw it running around etc.

This person has repeatedly posted that if someone doesn't come get the cat they are calling the animal shelter to come get it. On top of that, they go off on a thing about how much they HATE animals, their kids are allergic, and that no one's pets should be loose. That it is their house/yard and they don't want no animals on it.

Many of us have pets and offer to take any loose pet in till owner can be located. Our advice to this person is to just ignore the cat/dog and it will just go away. No need in threatening to take it to an over packed animal shelter. Plus just post it and someone will come get it if they have to.

They've had to stop her posts a few times now due to the anger they post. Never seen anyone state such hatred and anger over seeing a cat before. My cat is microchipped so it should be returned if animal control is contacted.

I came up with an idea of making a "Safe house" for pets. Where if someone finds a lost pet, it could be put in someone's yard till owner can locate it. What do you think? Any other ideas? I am just shocked at the venom this person spews over something so simple. I hate to think when we become a real HOA how to handle this person.

"put in someone's yard"

How will you ensure it stays there?

Well a cat not going to stay. I do have a large pet carrier if needed for a cat or small dog. My yard is fenced along with others. Not sure if this neighbor's yard is fenced or not. It should be if they are this hateful of things getting into their yard.

I don't see how this is an HOA issue. HOA's can't prohibit people from disliking pets. The discussion isn't happening on an HOA sponsored social media page.

We will be a HOA after developer turns over. There are no official rules of pets that I have read. This neighbor is flat out threatening of animals. Which means eventually pet rules will be an issue people will want the HOA to have. Don't think anyone wants to deal with this attitude within the HOA even if not owned by the owners.

I don’t hate pets but I hate owners that let their pets run loose.

I always encourage people to call animal control on a loose dog or cat. It’s not my responsibility to protect your pet from being hit by a car or eat something toxic, etc.

Maybe owners who keep having to pay fines to get their animals out of the pound will learn to take better care of them.

Under no circumstances is it the HOAs responsibility to ensure loose animals are cared for.

General comments:

* If you have coyotes or other predators in your area, small stray animals or pets probably won't be a significant issue.

* People who let their pets run loose when there are predators or whack job neighbors in the area are pretty much asking for what they get. People who love their pets protect them.

* There may be zoning laws that regulate or forbid turning your property into an animal sanctuary.

* An HOA that doesn't think about this stuff proactively (ie, the pet restriction, the noxious/offensive activity restriction, and permissible uses of the property) is pretty much asking for what it gets. I don't believe that the HOA will exist after turnover - it exists now, otherwise all homeowners would have to retroactively vote to join it and that's bass-ackwards.

* You can report offensive posts to Facebook. It may or may not help, given the variety of spew that apparently passes muster.

I feel for you Melissa. Take screen shoots of all the offending post and print them out.File a complaint with animal control, because the police won't do caca. A little over 2.5 years ago my rear corner neighbor took to ND complaining about dogs barking near the pool.

One of my dogs gets excited when we leave the house, he starts barking his head off INSIDE. Since I am "near" the pool, I sent him a private message apologizing and said I'll do my best to keep my one dog calm in the morning when I leave for work and take the kid to school. Well, he didn't like that. He took to ND and publicly stated that he has no problems whatsoever taking nuisance dogs and dropping them off miles away in the middle of the desert. Within a few days, my Husky began vomiting and I took him to the Vet, I showed them the ND post. The problem is, IF he was poisoned, the vet needs to know what the poison is.

From there I filed a criminal complaint with animal control. An AC officer had a copy of the ND Posting and cited them for threats to animal welfare. Luckily this nozzle had his house listed on the MLS and
he was just waiting for the house to close.

Just for clarification. We are NOT talking about dogs/cats INTENTIONALLY left to run around. I am talking about the pets that accidently escape. The dog or dogs known to "roam" don't belong in our neighborhood but are tagged stating as such. I've not seen it since this section built.

Everyone walks their dogs on leashes or kept in fenced yards. Not every pet that gets loose is from our neighborhood. So it's not like people are just letting their pets run rampant.

sounds like you volunteered to take in animals till owners claim them. it's a nice neighborly thing to do. I doubt you can change this persons feelings towards roaming animals. some motion detector water sprinklers will get rid of roaming cats fast.
