How would you handle a unit owner who wants to put a BLM sign in their window when signs are not allowed in windows. There is a rule for it.

Unless you are prepared to abandon the rule, then I would enforce it. You cannot make an exception for one owner.

I would absolutely enforce it. Why should they get a pass and are you prepared to allow others to display other flags including White Lives Matter? This is a disaster waiting to happen. Stay out of this mess.

If your CCRs, Rules and Regs, or whatever say no signs, it should absolutely be enforced.

Can you post the excerpt of that component, and which doc it is in?

I absolutely agree with the consensus. you need to enforce this covenant immediately. The US Flag, branch and service flags are protected by law as well are signs that support a political candidate and or issue/ levy.

Our CC&Rs also say no signs, banners, etc of any kind in our condo high rise windows.

BUT CA Civil Code 4710 supersedes our documents and says we canNOT prohibit non-commercial signs, banners, etc in windows. We CAN (and do) limit the size, material, etc.

So, Michelle, you probably need to check your CT statutes or maybe even those of your municipality. Your HOA attorney, if you have one, will know the answer. Are you condos or detached homes?

When you do enforce:

Make it clear that you are enforcing because it is a sign, not because of the type of sign.

Make sure there are no other signs up, or enforce against those too.

Have you folks been looking the other way at signs in windows supporting Trump?

One thing I am finding among BLM opponents is that they are not even-handed. This of course is no surprise. The failure to be fair has largely brought us to this sorry state of affairs.

Has the OP's board been even-handed on the issue of signs in windows?

Good answers from others. BUT, Michelle, you still need to learn first whether your HOA may really prohibit non-commercial signs/banners in your state and maybe city befforeyou take any action against this Owner.
